ESSAY CONTEST: NATURE OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED CAMPS IN NORTH EASTERN NIGERIA

In the world today, where war and chaos is the order of the day, As a result of this, innocent people tend to loose their properties, homes, and even their lives to this chaos.
North Eastern Nigeria is no exception as war rages on and on causing innocent Nigerian citizen their lives, properties and homes. This has forced them to leave their home in search of peace away from the chaos.
Estimates provides that out of 21.5 million people living in the North Eastern region of the country, 2.1 million have lost their homes due to the incessant attacks from a group of people.
Conflict between the militant organization, who started an armed insurgency against the government of Nigeria in 2009 led by Abubakar Shekau. Tension escalated when the group known as Boko Haram became affiliated with ISIL, branded as the world deadliest terrorist group. Their act of terrorism became well known all over the world, when in 2014 10,849 deaths occurred due to the insurgency. over time, lives and properties have since been lost and due to the fear of being persecuted, innocent Nigerians flee from their abode internally displaced camps spread all over the region.
Unhappiness ,disdain, and fear dominates in the life of people in the camp . As innocent Nigerians suffer in the hands of an unwilling government who turns deaf ears to their pleas.
Due to the bad state of this camps blameless Nigerians are forced to live in poor unhygienic camp environment, and they stand the risk of being attacked by the insurgents due to inadequate security. As a result of this, fear has turned to the normal way of life for this displaced people coupled with various challenges such as lack of clean water, poor health facility, lack of personnel ( Doctors). All this combine and lead to major catastrophic events such as cholera outbreak, which are not uncommon within the camps .
People who have no means of survival, no job, caused by the war going on in their region and the government who are apathetic to their needs due to the high monetary cost in maintaining the camps, As a result of this displaced people suffer from lack of bedding, lack of mosquito nets.
Hunger and malnutrition is very common among children due to lack of food or lack of the right type of food, This has caused them to become malnourished.
The sorrow associated with all this major problems is so sad and depressing as innocent citizens of Nigeria continue to live in unfavorable conditions.
