Maria Makiling

In the Philippines we have a diwata or forest nymph called Maria Makiling. She guards the mountain with the same name Makiling which is in the provinces of Laguna and Batangas.

According to the local legend, it is said Maria Makiling is a beautiful lady, benevolent and helpful to those who also treat the mountain well. She is however vengeful to those who would harm the mountain and it's Flora and fauna. Some of them get lost in the woods, others experience unexplainable pain or sickness.

Inspiration:
The Mount Makiling itself is what I used in creating the image of the forest nymph, Maria Makiling. If you take a closer look the mountain's silhouette looks like a reclining figure of a woman. Many believed this is the nymph herself. I am showing her hair is cascading down the mountain as her face is looking away. This symbolizes the kind and life giving nymph. There's a form of lighting on her hair as well to reflect the punishment she cast on offenders. She wears a golden headdress and a luminous flowy dress typical of a nymph. The green ricefield symbolizes her abundance.
