DOES A LAWN MOWER REALLY CUT GRASS?
--WHAT IS A LAWN MOWER--
Many centuries earlier, the grass was cut by workers who walked through fields or pastures wielding small and sharp scythes. This manual cutting was tiring and slow as well as ineffective. Moreover, the scythes worked well only when the grass was wet. Therefore, a hand-operated or motor-driven device was introduced to cut the grass on a lawn. This is known as "Lawn Mower."
--BACKGROUND--
In 1830, the first mechanical grass-cutting machine was discovered when an English textile worker "Edwin Budding" developed a mower based on a textile machine used to shear the nap off of cloth. This cylindrical mower was attached with some roller. As a result, it shaved grass with a curved cutting edge attached to the cylindrical mower. It had two sizes, large and small. Horses drew the large mower. The smaller mower was marketed to country gentlemen who find amusing, useful and healthful exercise in the machine.
Cylinder or reel mowers
A cylinder or reel mower has a fixed cutting blade that is horizontal at the desired height. Moreover, it has a fast-spinning reel of blades which force the grass past the cutting bar. Every blade in this cylinder forms a helix around the reel axis. Hence, the set of spinning blades describes a cylinder.
In fact, a properly adjusted cylinder mower makes the cleanest cut of the grass. As a result, this allows the grass to heal more quickly. Moreover, the cut of this cylinder or reel mower is straight and definite forming perfect cutting of the grass.
Rotary Mowers
A rotary mower is another type of lawn mowers that rotates about a vertical axis with the blade spinning at high speed. This results in a rougher cut and bruises and shreds the grass leaf resulting in discoloration of the leaf. This type of mowers is particularly used if the blades become clogged as well as blunt. These mowers also tend to cut lower (13 mm) than a standard four-wheeled rotary.
--THE FUTURE OF LAWN MOWERS--
Like many other alternative devices, the lawn mowers will benefit from the development of more and more efficient power sources. Recently, the solar-powered lawn mower was introduced. This mower uses energy from the sun instead of gasoline as fuel. Moreover, it needs no oil changes. The other benefit is that it operates very quietly. On the other hand, its major drawback is the amount of energy its battery can store. However, with the development of batteries with more storage capabilities, this drawback will disappear.
