Perfect reviews of perfect movies - Experimenter. Should we actually follow the orders?
Experimenter is a perfect example of any biography drama. It is pretty slow; there are no plot twists or breath-taking moments. It is only about real life. However, how often that real life happens to be the most ridiculous and insane place? Before watching this movie I did not know the guy or his experiments, so it was all new to me.
I kind of felt that humans do obey the orders, but I never knew that it is scientifically proven. We are actually that stupid after all...
We obey. We do not know why.
Experimenter centers on that one experiment when a teacher has to shock a student with high voltage after student gets the answer to a silly question wrong. It gets interesting when student starts to shout and ask for help and mercy. Of course, no one is getting any shock and student is actually an actor. Teacher does not know that, though. 65 percent of all the examined people still pressed that button to shock the student, even though, they were begged not to.
Even worse, if it all was true they could actually kill the guy. And it is all only because a guy pretending to be a doctor was sitting and telling them that it is necessary for the experiment.
Where does that leave us? People follow the orders.
Yes, they all hesitate, stress, and ask if it is all right (it was obvious that nothing was all right), but in the end they still press that button. Why the hell would we risk another human’s life just to obey the orders from higher power? I believe that it is the most comfortable and easy way of living for many of us.You follow the order, you do the harm, but you can say that it is not your actual responsibility.
In other words - humans run away from making a decision.
Millions of people died during the holocoust just because others were too stupid to make their own decisions and disobey. It was easier to follow a psychopath. Also, if you disobey your superiorities, you have to take the risk, and it might harm your own well-being. Sadly, but between your own well-being and other person’s life, most of us choose well-being (I am not evil, but that what experiment says). Personally, I do not know what I would do in this kind of obedience experiment. I believe that I would disobey, but so did everybody else.
Ignorant pricks who cannot face the truth
To me, the best part of Experimenter is when full room of intelligent people bashed Stanley Milgram (main guy) for making his obedience experiment. They blamed the guy for being immoral and for making those poor people (the ones who were willing to shock an innocent person) to suffer stress during the experiment.
I just have an allergy for those moral slaves who would rather live in a fake world than just accept that not everything is so beautiful.
It drives me crazy even more that those moral slaves are usually Harvard professors, doctors and all the “intelligent” ones. They are the ones that are always right and if you dare to disagree, then you are disobeying and that makes you the enemy. People should actually reconcider who they call intelligent.
No one in a room full of professors wanted to talk about why are human-beings so corrupted. Yup, it makes you think about yourself and that is too hard - even for smart professors. Experimenter shows that pretty delicately, but still clearly. The easiest way is just to shut up everyone who cares about improving or understanding, and live life with those purple glasses instead, obeying all the orders. It suits everyone until another holocaust kicks-in, and you are a jew living in Germany. However, it is too late to ask “Why?” then.
Yup, purple glasses eventually fall and crash. So why wear it?
