Story of a bad-ass pedagogue, who used aliens to climb up the career ladders

A new sci-fi Hollywood movie, featuring Amy Adams, Forrest Whitaker, Jeremy Renner, and aliens. Every self-respectful geek is talking about "Rogue One" nowadays, but I believe "Arrival" has to be covered as well. It is a breath of fresh air compared to Hollywood's "let's create one more drama, based on true story, about a crippled genius who saves the world, and gets in love".

Arrival is a movie about octopus-like alien pedagogues, who come to the world in order to improve humans' linguistic skills. I know that it sound boring at first, but believe me - it is an entertaining movie.

Plot

What's up with octopus aliens coming to Earth?

Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is a world-class linguist who has previously lost a child and now spends her days, teaching Portuguese and other strange languages. Of course, Louise is a little devastated and desperate... just like your average school/university teacher. However, aliens come to the world one day. Guess whose time is it to step up and show some real intelligence? Yup, our hero of the movies is Professor Louise. Excited already?

So, Colonel Weber (Forest "funny eyes" Whitaker) comes to Louise and recruits her for a mission to encrypt the language of aliens. Easy task, but Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) is also recruited to the help, because a good movie has to have a romantic plot-line.

Ian is a single scientist, who claims that he is single, because of lacking social skills. I think that he was single because of those super cliché pick-up lines he used throughout whole movie. It really made me go "Seriously? That is the best you could think of?" However, it suited whole movie, so I could handle it. Also, he scored so my hating is irrelevant.

pretending to understand what the hell is going on just to keep a job

A little about the aliens. For some odd reason they looked like octopus, and on top of that, wrote with ink. Yes, when you lack of ideas, you can simply observe nature. Anyway, 12 big spaceships, full of those aliens, came to Earth. Apparently those aliens were super geniuses in technology and life itself, but were dumb enough to land in Russia's and China's territory. I mean, why the hell you would want to mess with those countries while staring in a Hollywood's movie... Silly aliens did not watch enough films to understand that China and Russia is forever evil when it comes to Hollywood.

So, every country started interacting with aliens and learning their language. It was like watching some high-level spelling bee competition, where best linguists from all over the world, are trying to understand new words. Everyone used all kinds of different techniques to communicate with those aliens and understand why the hell they came to earth. At some point, aliens said "Use weapon" and the shit hit the fan.

just Amy Adams bonding with aliens

China and Russia started a war against those huge alien spaceships... smart generals thought that they can destroy everything with some tanks and bombs. Straightforward thinking at its best... On the meantime, Louise still believed that aliens are good and went to a secret date with them. Risky and stupid, but as they say "high risks - high rewards". Yup, apparently aliens were good and only came to teach people how to speak a new language. Louise was the first one to understand their purpose, and she also understood the language.

Some crazy twist happened at this point, which I won't tell you about to avoid massive spoils, so bla bla bla... and we get to the point, when Louise saves the freaking world, talks China out of nuking aliens, and everyone is super happy.

this time Amy goes bat-shit crazy just to impress her superiors

Lessons learned

  1. If you are being friendly with everyone, you will always be rewarded. Especially, when you befriend intellectual octopuses with amazing talents, or someone important with a lot of money. Don't waste your time on no-names.
  2. Learning new languages is very important and it opens up your knowledge of the world.
  3. Amy Adams can act.
  4. Never trust communists, because Hollywood always pictures them as stupid and evil... And who else can you believe in, if you don't trust this super objective, censor-free business of Hollywood, right?
  5. Time is irrelevant, so you have to appreciate every minute of it, whatever happens.
  6. If we let octopuses out of the water and near some technology, they will take over the world. Smart anima...aliens.
  7. Main heroes are indestructible by fire and explosions.
  8. Humans will never work in harmony, because of fear and greed.

Amy is thinking about one more oscar

This movie is totally worth to see for everyone who is a fan of sci-fi. It is intelligent, well-acted, and unpredictable.
9/10.
