Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Blooper Reel Has Been Officially Released

Kurt Russell nearly gets socked in face by a zooming camera and Sylvester Stallone keeps flubbing a word in a preview of the gag reel for the upcoming video release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Kicking off the summer movie season in May, Vol. 2 was a blockbuster hit out of the gate, earning $145 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office.

The second-biggest domestic hit of the summer after Wonder Woman, Vol. 2 to date has racked up nearly $388 million domestically (and $472.9 million overseas) for a global cume of $860.8 million, and is promising to be a huge hit on video when it’s released digitally August 8 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD August 22.

To get fans primed for the video release, Vol. 2 writer-director James Gunn gave is starting release sneak peeks at some of the bonus features, including a minute of the film’s gag reel to EW. Among the moments are Sylvester Stallone’s multiple attempt to say the word “Ravagers,” Dave Bautista dropping a bleeped F-bomb when he flubs a line (drawing a startled “yikes!” look from Zoe Saldana). Michael Rooker also drops a bleeped F-bomb during his famous Mary Poppins scene (saying “I’m Mary Poppins f—ers!”), and is shown cracking up along with several other cast mates including Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Bautista and Russell.

The gag reel preview ends with Russell, who plays Star-Lord’s (Pratt) long-lost intergalactic father, Ego, standing solitary as a camera zooms in and nearly bonks him in the nose. Of the near-mishap, Gunn tells EW.

“The amazing thing about that moment is that Kurt did not budge. You look at him, and he’s such a pro, that he’s just standing there. Oh my god, it went way too close. We were just an inch away from him getting his face broken open and that would have been the end of Kurt Russell on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We would have had to reshoot everything with Pauly Shore.”

Given the quirky comedic tone of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, fans shouldn’t be surprised that the feeling on the set appears light and definitely comes through in the moments of miscues in the Vol. 2 gag reel. There are bound to be more flubs featured in Vol. 2’s home entertainment release, which will also include deleted scenes and a Gunn commentary track. Also sure to get laughs is a music video for the song “Inferno,” directed by Gunn, which he says will feature Vol. 2 cameo actor David “The Hoff” Hasselhoff and “so many of the key players from the Guardians playing the ‘Guardians Inferno’ disco theme.”

Gunn says he’s become buds with The Hoff, and said he was a “fantastic, fantastic person to have on set.” Gunn said in the two-plus decades he’s been working in the business, Hasselhoff is the only person that caused the crew to line up at the end of the day so they could get pictures with him. With any luck, Hasselhoff will be back for more fun in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
