The Others (2001)

Grace, played by Nicole Kidman, the devoutly religious mother of Anne, played by Alakina Mann, and Nicholas, played by James Bentley, moves her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. Anne claims she sees ghosts, Grace initially thinks the new servants are playing tricks but chilling events and visions make her believe something supernatural has occurred. 

The Illusionist (2006)

A master magician named Eisenheim, played by Edward Norton, vies with Crown Prince Leopold, played by Rufus Sewell, of Vienna for the hand of noblewoman Sophie, played by Jessica Biel, the girl he once loved. He brings his considerable powers to bear on the prince, as she is about to be named royal fiancee. However, a police inspector named Uhl, played by Paul Giamatti, tries to warn Eisenheim that he is playing a very dangerous game. 

The Orphanage (2007)

Laura, played by Belén Rueda, has happy memories of her childhood in an orphanage. She convinces her husband to buy the place and help her convert it into a home for sick children. One day, her own adopted son, Simón, played by Roger Príncep, disappears. Simon is critically ill, and when he is still missing several months later, he is presumed dead. Grief-stricken Laura believes she hears spirits, who may or may not be trying to help her find the boy. 

The Mist (2007)

After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton, played by Thomas Jane, and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot, played by Marcia Gay Harden, calls for a sacrifice. 

Triangle (2009)

Yacht passengers encounter mysterious weather conditions that force them to jump onto another ship, only to have the odd havoc increase. 

Mystic River (2003)

When the daughter, played by Emmy Rossum, of ex-con Jimmy Marcus, played by Sean Penn, is murdered, two of his childhood friends from the neighborhood are involved. Dave, played by Tim Robbins, a blue-collar worker, was the last person to see her alive, while Sean, played by Kevin Bacon, a homicide detective, is heading up the case. As Sean proceeds with his investigation, Jimmy conducts one of his own through neighborhood contacts. Eventually, Jimmy suspects Dave is the culprit and considers taking the law into his own hands. 

The Prestige (2006)

An illusion gone horribly wrong pits two 19th-century magicians, Alfred Borden, played by Christian Bale, and Rupert Angier, played by Hugh Jackman, against each other in a bitter battle for supremacy. Terrible consequences loom when the pair escalate their feud, each seeking not just to outwit, but to destroy, the other man.
