Insomniac Film Festival #29: Top Secret

David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker may be responsible for some of my earliest movie comedy memories. I have no idea why I remember Airplane so clearly beyond my Dad loved it. I have no idea how many times I saw The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, only that Dad took us to see it and then didn't mind if we went again (this was before all the OJ real life drama). I remember Top Secret from before I was aware of what it was: crazy comedy.
I don't even know how to describe Top Secret. It's a parody of World War II spy thrillers AND a parody of the musicals of the 50s and 60s that featured Elvis Presley and other rockers trying to act. How they mashed these two genres together defies logic and they don't even try to maintain any sense of that. The story, ostensibly follows a rockstar, Nick Rivers, played by a very young Val Kilmer, to East Germany (google it kids) where he gets involved in a plot to stop the East Germans from taking out the NATO fleet while also helping the French Resistance and the woman he loves rescue her father. He sings, he gets tortured, he sings some more, there's action and fleeing and cows and an underwater bar fight and all sorts of zany.
It's funny but don't try to follow the plot, it doesn't even try itself. Just let it wash over you.
