Movie For A Sunday: L'Inferno (Dante's Inferno)

in #movies7 years ago

Based on Dante Alighieri's poem La Divina Comedia (The Divine Comedy), L'Inferno is Dante's perception of Hell. Made in 1911, it is the oldest surviving feature length film. Directed by Francesco Bertolini, Adolfo Padovan and Giuseppe De Liguoro, they do a masterful job of making the film adhere to Dante's story. The illustrations are done by sketch artist Gustav Dore (whose drawing of Jesus I posted a week or so ago) and the music is provided courtesy of Tangerine Dream.

The story is of an excursion by Dante through the nine layers of Hell, guided by the poet Virgil. He was prompted to write his epic poem after the death of a nine-year old girl named Beatrice, whose soul Dante was concerned about. I apologize for the somewhat grainy quality, but what do you want for 1911! Dante's perceptions are very interesting and I hope you enjoy this treasure as much as I did.
