Captain Marvel makes it into the Billion Dollars Club

Captain Marvel made it into the billion dollars club. It was clear from the movie's really big opening that it will make it to a billion, but it is not something to be taken for granted. Most Marvel movies (that are not Avengers movies) make around 800 million dollars. For example: Thor: Ragnarok made 853 million dollars, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 made 863 million dollars. Remember that Ant-Man and the WASP movie was meant to be important for the Avengers movies? Well the movie still made only 622 million dollars. So Captain Marvel's achievement is not something to be taken lightly as if it's something all Marvel movies can achieve.

Captain Marvel is the seventh Marvel movie to make over a billion dollars and it is the third solo movie to make it over a billion dollars for the people who don't count Captain America: Civil War as a solo movie (yeah, it's Avengers 2.5). It is now the 38 most successful movie of all time, and surprisingly, it is also the 38 movie ever to make over a billion dollars. Sure the fact that it is super close and connected to one of the most anticipated movies of all times, Avengers: Endgame helped. Like Avengers: Infinity War helped Black Panther. Also like Black Panther eventually this movie managed to make itself seem like an important event, for women, for military people and for Marvel fans. Captain Marvel managed to become a record breaking movie event.

Unlike Black Panther and unlike Wonder Woman audiences outside of the U.S. responded well to this movie, and it made a healthy 36% percent of its money in the U.S. and a healthy 64% of its money outside of the U.S. It made a lot of money in China and in South Korea. I think that it has to do with the fact that this is a simpler movie and it is fast passed, even if it's not action packed.

I also expect to see a higher demand for the movie when Avengers: Endgame will come out. People who will see the movie might want to see more of Carol Danvers, and people who won't manage to see the Avengers: Endgame because all tickets are sold out, could settle for another Marvel movie. We saw the same thing happen with Black Panther.

You can bet that it's not just Black Widow movie that will get the green light at Marvel after this kind of success.
