How Wonder Woman Saved the DCEU

in #movies7 years ago (edited)

Hi movie marauders! The DCEU (DC Extended Universe) began with Man of Steel in 2013. It added Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, Suicide Squad in 2016, and Wonder Woman in 2017. Soon, Justice League (November 17, 2017) will come out along with the corresponding movies for the Justice League members. Before Wonder Woman, DC just wasn't as good as Marvel. People were excited for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was supposed to be the doorway to the Justice League, Wonder Woman, and compete with the MCU (especially Captain America: Civil War). I think this movie failed because it was supposed to accomplish too many things at once.

Suicide Squad was going to be just what DC needed, but it did not meet fan's expectations. It wasn't terrible, but it's definitely not a movie that you would put in the top 10 best superhero films. The tone of all the DCEU movies were dark, and the stories just weren't as entertaining as the MCU. Wonder Woman changed all that, and gave fans hope that DC can be funny and are able to produce amazing superhero films. Here are some reasons why Wonder Woman changed the DCEU in a good way [Please note that this article contains Wonder Woman SPOILERS]:

Wonder Woman Had An Amazing Story

Instead of the movie's problem being solved by "saving Martha," Wonder Woman had to actually go on a journey and stop Ares. The movie kept you on the edge of your seat and had amazing action sequences. When Diana went through No Man's Land, it put a huge smile on my face. This changed from when I saw Batman v. Superman and was SO disappointed with the direction the movie went in. (Wonder Woman did not change its tone because of Batman v. Superman). If Wonder Woman were bad, people would definitely not be looking forward to the origin stories of the Justice League members. Of course, Wonder Woman's amazing story came with likeable and entertaining characters. This includes Steve Trevor, Antiope, Hippolyta, Charlie, Etta Candy, and Sameer.

These characters added to the movie and provided humor. Wonder Woman proves that just because the movie is about a superhero, it doesn't mean it has to be so serious. Hopefully the other origin stories will have a lighter tone and at least some humor (and of course amazing action sequences).

The Themes Of The Movie

Wonder Woman had some amazing messages and the movie was made for a purpose. It wasn't just created to make money or open the doorway to even more movies. Wonder Woman discussed doing what is right even if no one else wants to do it. Diana influenced a change in Steve Trevor, and showed him that civilian's lives are more important than getting a notebook to his superiors (even if that notebook is Dr. Posion's).

Diana also realized her full potential while on her journey. She didn't go out and fight Ares because of a prophecy or because she was forced to. She did it because she genuinely cares about people's lives. Diana is so good at heart and believes if she is able to do something, she won't let anything stop her.

Also, no one believed her that Ares was causing the war. Steve didn't even believe her. This shows that Diana won't let what other people think get in the way of stopping her. The other DCEU movies don't really have any major character arcs or really strong themes like Wonder Woman. That is one of the main reasons Wonder Woman has really affected the DCEU.

The Vibe/Tone Of The Movie

Superhero movies are much more enjoyable when they have a couple of jokes. Wonder Woman had a very bright tone and humor. I loved the scenes when she was talking to Steve about men. The tone of Wonder Woman was so different than anything we have scene from DC so far.

Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad were very gritty and didn't have a lighthearted side. I thought that Man of Steel was a pretty good origin story, but the whole movie was very serious. Wonder Woman just had so many amazing aspects, and when they were all put together it made one of the best superhero films.

Movie Marauder rates Wonder Woman a 96/100.
