After years of escape, an Italian, posing as Hollywood star George Clooney and making a big profit, has been captured in Thailand. 58-year-old Francesco Galdelli was arrested on Saturday in a house in Pattaya with his 45-year-old wife Vanja Goffi, the Thai police said: The success of the investigation was the result of cooperation between the Thai and Italian authorities.

According to investigators, Galdelli admitted that he had turned out to be George Clooney and sold a clothes-line on the internet under his name. In Italy, Galdelli and Goffi are charged with other offenses such as the online sale of counterfeit Rolex watches. Sometimes, according to the investigators, they sent their victims not even counterfeit watches, but salt packets.

The real George Clooney had already testified in 2010 in a trial in Milan against the swindler couple. The US actor referred to numerous inconsistencies. "That's a fake: I smoke in this photo, even though I do not smoke at all" or "I do not have such a clock," George Clooney said roughly.

The pair has been sought since 2013 by the international police organization Interpol with a so-called Red Notice. Because of various offenses, the two got the nickname "Italian Bonnie and Clyde" in reference to the famous US gangster couple.

In Thailand, Galdelli and Goffi have lived since 2014. They would never have left the country, police said. Her very luxury property was overseen by investigators, most notably a drone. The seaside resort of Pattaya, where Galdelli and Goffi sought refuge, is known as a stronghold of prostitution and a sanctuary for criminals from all over the world.

According to police, the couple is now initially due to violate immigration laws in a Thai court come before the procedure for delivery to Italy begins.
