Over 6 Hours Long And Still An Extremely Short Movie
As a cinephile, I watch a lot of movies but one with a length of more than 6 hours is definitely not something you see everyday. Then, you start to think, "will it be even worth it?"...
One of the the most difficult problems a cinephile has ever had to deal with.
But miracles DO exist, and a movie that's 366 minutes long can even be a time-saver!
"La Meglio Gioventù" ("The Best Of Youth") is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE in every sense of the word, a spellbinding epic that follows an Italian family and their own journey of life from 1960s to 2000s.
Four decades of Italian history as part of the movie's background, director Marco Tulio Giordana had enough time to work on each character's development and gradually made every single one of them a part of the viewer's family. Never an easy task. Yet the director and the cast accomplished it flawlessly in a very powerful way which you rarely see in the cinema of 2000s. The characters and the psychology behind their motives are believable thanks to great acting performances and clever screenwriting. There is no green screens here with eye-catchy special effects but only the screen of life with all its realness.
"La Meglio Gioventù" is simply not one of those movies that you watch and forget. It will follow you, and become a part of you. It will make you think about the crossroads in your life and your own ways to deal with hardships.

There is no place for any kind of "stereotype abuse" here. This is a very "human" film. It's crystal clear that this movie understands human nature deeply, our fragile ego and tendency for self-destruction. There are nothing but unforgettable moments and life lessons here.
They say "It's not WHAT you say but it's HOW you say it that matters". The quote is valid especially when it comes to cinematic experience. To be honest, there is nothing new in the movie for the "WHAT" part. Only God knows how many souls experienced similar/same tests of life throughout thousands of years. But the way "La Meglio Gioventù" tells the stories of those souls is what makes this film extraordinary.
A must watch. Don't miss it. Six hours are not enough.
