The movie is about three gunslingers competing to find the fortune of Confederate gold hidden away. It plays out against the violent chaos of the American Civil War and more specifically the New Mexico Campaign in 1862. On their way, the gunslingers participate in many battles and duels. The movie concludes where the trio stares each other down. Everyone draws - Blondie (Clint Eastwood) kills Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef). Tuco (Eli Wallach) founds his gun unloaded (by Blondie the night before). They found the gold while Blondie holds Tuco at gunpoint. With a hangman's noose around his neck, Tuco screams for mercy. Blondie severs the rope with a rifle shot, dropping Tuco, alive but tied up, onto his share of the gold.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was marketed as the third and final instalment in the Dollars Trilogy, following A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More. The film was a financial success, grossing over $25 million at the box office, and is credited as the movie who made Clint Eastwood the emblem of cowboy movies.

With the release, the movie was criticised due to a general disapproval of the Spaghetti Western genre at the time. In later years it gained critical acclaim. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is now seen as one of the greatest and most influential Westerns of all time.
