Poetic Film Review: We the Living (Noi vivi, 1942)
In twilight's glow, a story's told,
Of Italy's rise, a cinematic gold.
The Fascist era's foundation laid,
For a nation's dreams, in celluloid conveyed.
We the Living, a drama of the past,
A tale of love and ideology that would not last.
Based on Ayn Rand's novel, a semi-autobiographical tale,
Of Kira, Andrei, and Leo, in Petrograd's troubled vale.
Kira, a daughter of a bourgeois family's name,
Returns to Petrograd, as the Bolsheviks claim their fame.
With Andrei, a GPU operative, she finds friendship rare,
Yet, her heart belongs to Leo, an aristocrat with nothing to spare.
The production's story, a tale of war and strife,
Italy and the USA, in conflict, no rights to life.
Alessandrini, with Visconti, breaks the law,
Adapting Rand's novel, without a thought to the cause.
The film's release, in 1942, met with success,
Yet, Mussolini's regime, saw fit to suppress.
The female protagonist's love triangle, a taboo too far,
Or was it the critique of all authoritarian rule, the reason for the scar?
The film survives, in restoration, a treasure rare,
With Alida Valli's performance, a star beyond compare.
The acting superb, the story's depth and layers,
A depiction of life in the Soviet Union, in its early years.
In We the Living, a story of love and strife,
A tale of ideologies, clashing in life.
A film of the past, yet timeless in its theme,
A tribute to cinema's power, to capture the human dream.
