Poetic Film Review: Richard III (1955)

In the realm of cinematic history, a tale unfolds,
Of a Shakespearean play, by Olivier refolded.
Richard III, a sequel of sorts, to Henry V's acclaim,
A film that stands out, in the Bard's most famed name.

The stage is set, in the Wars of the Roses' strife,
Where York and Lancaster, in battle life.
Edward IV reigns, with Richard, his brother so bright,
But discontent grows, as Richard's covetousness ignites.

Through cunning and ruthlessness, he eliminates the way,
To ascend the throne, in a most vile display.
His vile deeds, even his supporters cannot abide,
As cold-blooded murder stains the Tower's inside.

The final confrontation, at Bosworth Field's name,
Richard's forces clash, with Henry's troops to claim.
A British epic, in widescreen format so grand,
Competing with Hollywood, to make a lasting stand.

However, the premiere's strategy, in the US did fail,
Released simultaneously, on screens and on cable's frail.
The critical reception, at first did not align,
But a 1966 re-run, brought acclaim to the screen's shine.

Olivier's film, built on stage adaptation so wise,
A smooth and comprehensive narrative, in Shakespeare's disguise.
Though long and flowery, the dialogue may seem,
The second part unfolds, with Richard's actions extreme.

A climactic showdown, at Bosworth Field takes place,
Despite Spanish olive groves, the scene holds its own grace.
Olivier's masterful performance, a standout so bright,
A villainous king, with a courteous demeanor in sight.

Inspired by Jed Harris, his looks and mannerisms so grand,
A contrast between his façade, and intentions so banned.
An impressive cast, of knights and actors so fine,
Aided Olivier's portrayal, in this historic epic divine.

Richard III, a film of old school charm, so true,
A glimpse into the past, of cinema's golden hue.
An ode to Olivier, and his prowess so rare,
A lasting legacy, for all to share.
