Poetic Film Review: Lucky Number Slevin (2006)
In the realm of cinema, timing's the key,
A film's fate, its success, all hinge on when it's free.
Lucky Number Slevin, a crime thriller's plea,
Released too late, its potential, we'll never see.
Slevin Kelevra, our protagonist, in strife,
A series of misfortunes, life's not a life.
His troubles multiply, in Manhattan's night,
Mistaken for a target, his world takes flight.
The Boss, a powerful figure, with Morgan Freeman's grace,
Offers a task, a debt to settle, in this twisted race.
The Rabbi too, with Ben Kingsley's charm,
Makes a similar offer, to Slevin, his harm.
Lindsey, an amateur detective, with Lucy Liu's poise,
Aids Slevin in his quest, to find the truth, to unclose.
Smith, the hitman, and Brikowski, the cop,
Add to the chaos, as our story's plot.
The film's premise, a tribute to Hitchcock's style,
An ordinary man, in an extraordinary guile.
The gangsters, the plot, a nod to Tarantino's way,
But alas, the timing, was not on its side, that day.
Released when Tarantino's influence had waned,
And imitators, their appeal, had lost their gains.
The cast, though solid, lacked chemistry and flair,
Hartnett, Freeman, and Kingsley, in roles that didn't compare.
McGuigan's direction, stylised violence in hand,
A substitute for humour, a narrative that's unplanned.
A film that's forgettable, a also-ran of its time,
Lucky Number Slevin, a missed opportunity, a crime.
