El Angel - The story of a young robber and serial killer

in #movies4 years ago (edited)

This film is based on real-life facts, the criminal was called Carlos Eduardo Robledo Puch and was jailed in Argentina when he was just 20 years old. In the movie, this character is portrayed as someone very relaxed and with incredibly advanced street skills that allow him to come out clean when facing difficult situations. Despite being so young, he is smarter than not only the average criminal but also than the average person.

He is studying in a new school and quickly identifies another student that can be of help to his growth in criminal activities. As is usual with psychopaths, the way he begins contact wasn't normal and was in fact a very risky, but thanks to his good calculation when planning this interaction, it pays off well.

From this point forward "el angel", as he was called in real life, will begin to commit criminal acts while having more fun than ever before. However you might ask yourself if this is just a student, does he live with his parents? And the answer is yes, but he still manages to live his criminal life without his parents really getting what it is that he is doing, at least in the beginning.

The types of crimes we see in this movie aren't very shocking. This character is nothing like the one in American Psycho, this is someone who looks like a regular guy but enjoys robbing and eventually develops a sort of indifference towards killing other people as long as it is necessary to complete the robbery.

As one could expect, and as the movie's poster shows, things get complicated towards the end. The film isn't only about crime, but it is also a drama, and if only the story had begun earlier in his life it also could have been considered a sort of coming-of-age for a criminal.

The movie is, of course, far from perfect, but most people will surely appreciate the acting of the main actor and the way the story is developed. It is not my Argentinian favorite film (this honor is for Heroic Losers from 2019) and it is also far from my crime favorites, but it is well worth the watch if you like its genres.

The best

  • Charismatic main character.
  • Good portray of the life of a young criminal.
  • Great acting all around.

The worst

  • Perhaps some parts of his personality were exaggerated, like his excessive overconfidence in some scenes.
