Synopsis: A young boy joins forces with Detective Pikachu to unravel the mystery behind his father's disappearance. Pursuing clues through the streets of Ryme City, the dynamic duo soon discovers a dishonest plot that poses a threat to the Pokémon universe.

A live action adaptation of one of the most acclaimed cartoons on world TV was the dream of many fans (and here I fully include myself, haha!). However, although this wish came true with the making of this film was not exactly as expected.

That's because the same has not yet been done based on the original anime (with the classic human characters: Ash, Misty or Brock, for example... based directly on video game games), unless of course, by the presence of the pokémons themselves (after all, the movie is about them). So the question remains in the air: Did it work? And the answer is a resounding YES!

IndieWire.

First of all, if you are an adult... You need to be aware of two aspects so that you can enjoy the movie the way it deserves: 1. You have to be an anime fan (or at least the game) and 2. You have to be open-minded and turn off the button of narrative rationality - and also logic - for the next 100 minutes (after all, the protagonist of the film is an animal that speaks and has super powers!).

That said, the script immerses the audience into a sea of unprecedented fun (and does not go to great lengths to do this ... succeeding in large part in their onslaughts). Everything on the screen is meticulously done to appeal to all types of fans (whether of the game or the anime)... But especially - as expected - focusing on the children's audience.

Considering that the fun brings together a wide range of pokémons (something that results in dynamic film and full of colors, beyond the nature present in its own nostalgia), one of the main highlights is the valorization about the construction of this universe so peculiar and so particular.

IGN Brasil

The plot is simplified, but not so underestimated (it's always good to remember this because many people tend to naturally demean movies with a theme that do not meet their personal logics). The script is established with fluidity and prints as a great adventure, having in his favor a group of charismatic and efficient characters (overwhelmingly by the little creatures).

The cast does not do any phenomenal work (although it behaves very well in the scenes, wearing their characters' clothing properly... especially the dubbing performed by Ryan Reynolds), but there is no way to detract from the chemistry they leave on the screen). Their interaction with CGI work is well choreographed and offers the viewer the real dimension of their actions.

Speaking about CGI, it's impossible not to mention the care and whimsy devoted to this essential point of the film. The special effects are minute and extremely realistic, making possible the experience of imagining such creatures full of physical peculiarities (and their respective superpowers) in a coexistence with humans in the real world.

Polygon

The thought-provoking action sequences (with the right to great battles of classic content and that certainly are a treat for the most demanding fans) are responsible for great moments of the film. As much as the plot screams surreality through its events throughout the projection, it can be explained in a fair and logical way... Becoming a satisfactory experience and consolidating itself, as a credible script and proportions.

Rob Letterman is leading the way and does a good job, making sure to distribute the movie spotlights to as many pokémons as possible (in fact, expect an increased mix of old and new pokémons). In addition (something that already shows care for the legacy of the anime and the importance of the game), humor is balanced - reserving funny jokes that really work - there is space reserved for a relevant drama the consequences of the development of the story and the rest technical details such as soundtrack, it remains a great support to make production even more exciting.

UHD Paper

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is pure entertainment (unquestioned and high quality!) Loaded with incredible nostalgia (something that is not explained, just feels), but without obviously forgetting the very rules and limitations established since its initial minutes... Making of it, at the end of everything, something plausible according to the guidelines that construct to its narrative.
