Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle Review, Worthy Continuation of Franchise
Follow up entries that come over 20 years after the original are often in a tough position. Fans have years to build up their expectations of what they feel a new entry should entail, often to the point of no satisfaction is possible. I figured this was the case with Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Interestingly enough, this entry lives up to the expectations I had in my mind – doesn't exceed them but it doesn't fail either.
Before we get too far into this, I want to mention my method of reviewing. I do my best to cut off the review in detail at about the half way mark of the movie to avoid spoilers. This may irk some but I feel it is the only fair way to keep those interested in seeing the movie without ruining it all for them.
In 1996 we see how the board game Jumanji gets around as it is discovered on a beach by a man who gives it to his son, Alex Vreeke. Welcome to the Jungle is tied to the original via some magic which changes the board game into a game cartridge early in the movie. This cartridge catches Alex's attention after the iconic drums wake him up. This is how Alex ends up in the game of Jumanji.
In 2016 we are introduced to four high school teenagers who attend Brantford High School. These four students are given detention for various reasons.
As punishment the four teens are given the task of cleaning out a room in the school basement to prepare it for a new computer class setup. This being a Friday, what they don't finish today will be finished on Saturday – much to the chagrin of the students.
Fridge, the football player of the group, discovers Alex Vreeke's game console, not sure why it is at school, and turns it on. Along with Spencer (nerd), Bethany (self absorbed girl), and Martha (anti-exercise, anti-social, student) they begin the game of Jumanji.
Some of the funnier parts of the movie happen early on. Such as Bethany ending up being played by Jack Black as Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon. The whining over a cell phone, the discovery of having a penis, the complaining over not having access to Instagram and other social media, etc are handled in a way only Jack Black could make funny and entertaining. Later in the movie, Jack Black's character is used for more funny scenes that give the movie a fun edge offsetting the dystopian situation the characters are facing.
Most of the funny parts between Johnson and Hart were revealed in the commercials so I won't waste time repeating them here – the funniest being the punch of Hart into the wall.
It is quickly deduced that each player has three lives and must complete the challenge of Jumanji before they are all lost.
This is where it gets interesting and takes a major swerve from the original movie. For one, the world of Jumanji is a completely and wholy unique world here, whereas the original had the Jumanji world directly effecting the real world.
With any good movie, there has to be a bad guy. Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle has plenty of them. For starters, there is Russel Van Pelt a corrupt archaeologist that has stolen the Jaguar's Eye. This gem gives the holder the power to control the animals of Jumanji. It also completely corrupts the holder if kept too long. Van Pelt has held the gem far longer than he should have.
The team figure out that the world is setup with levels and via a partially missing map, they begin the challenge of completing the game. Along the way they are rescued by a fifth player, Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough, who turns out to be Alex Vreeke – from 20 years ago.
Here we learn that time in Jumanji is handled differently than time in the real world as Alex thinks he has only been in Jumanji for a few months.
This is where the real challenge comes. The team learns that Alex has spent two of his three lives attempting the remainder of the game and has failed. It turns out that teamwork is the only way to complete Jumanji. A team of individuals with unique skills is what Alex lacked his first two attempts.
For me, I went into Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle with an open mind. Sure, I enjoyed the original and still do whenever I see it on television. This addition to the franchise is not as good as the original, it is missing that charm of a Robin Williams character, though Jack Black's character will probably end up going down in history with that “feel” applied to him over the years. His portrayal of Oberon is just that good. A mix of three characters, the original “Valley Girl” Bethany, the whole “girl in a guys body”, and finally the intellectual cartographer Sheldon Oberon.
If you want a movie that you can just watch and enjoy without having to figure out 300+ twists and turns then Jumanji is your movie. It is just fun adventuring with an ensemble cast that bring their own quirks and interesting takes on the characters to the fun.
Check out Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle on eBay. or check your local cable listings. This one is worth grabbing a copy as the Bluray is less than $13 and the DVD version is less than $8.
I've seen the movie and I did not regret watching it. The Jumanji I was more familiar with was the animated version of two kids playing the game repeatedly to find a way to free a friend inside. This one had an interesting take on from the old story. I would recommend it for family movie time.
I had completely forgotten about the animated television show! Thank you for reminding me of that. I am going to have to see if it ever got a DVD season release of some sort.
This movie though, it is definitely a good one for family. It may even help drive home some good wholesome family values as well.
@triverse Excellent review. I was hesitant about watching this movie but after your review, I think I will give it a go and watch it! Thanks for not giving away a lot of spoilers! :)
Thank you for reading my review. I hate it when people reviewing entertainment cover the whole thing. Most reviews leave me thinking, whelp, no reason to watch it now - they ruined it for me.
This is a worthy follow up to the original, just don't expect any endearing characters on the level of Robin Williams' performance, at least not right off the bat. Black's portrayal of his character, I think, will be the one people remember as being the best of the bunch - he is just that good here.
Jack Black is hit or miss with me. There are lots of films I like him in, and then there are those I can do without. I think he is a great comedic performer, though. I was more hesitant at Dwayne Johnson being in it in all honesty. While he has proven that he can act in certain films, there are those that I can live without. So, I will add this to my list of movies to watch! Thanks again, and I hope you don't mind that I have started to follow you as I hope to one day do movie reviews as well, as I am a stage performer and usually do plays based off of movies or vice versa, but I generally stay away from performing in musicals.
Johnson's acting here was not over the top except where it needed to be (as seen in the commercial where he hits Hart into the wall). It was almost like he was not really in the movie - he pulled off the whole "I am a game character that is really this other guy" trope quite well.
Black did a great job in this regard as well as you really got the feeling that he was a girl trapped in a guy's body in a game.
I am definitely not a fan of Black in general. His style of comedy is just off with me. Here, he is spot on though.
Thank you for the follow, I appreciate it. I don't review movies as often as I really want to (I run a PR firm, do reselling, and work a full time job so time is short sometimes). I end up focusing what free time I have on games and writing about them in some form.
Movies though are quickly becoming a bigger thing for me to cover.
Do you post articles on your work? I don't have the guts to perform for people, just too shy. Lol.
I made one post so far, when I first joined about my first major role in a stage production of "Prelude to a Kiss". I need to do some more, but sometimes they are kind of hard to describe. I actually got a callback today for a 2 week run for a play of an all female cast of a stage version of Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" that I had auditioned for a few weeks back. I actually had 2 auditions in one week and this is the first one I've heard back from so far.
I work full time as well, but play season is coming up and on weekends, if I am not busy and just want the work, I do dinner theater for a murder-mystery type of event. We can pick and choose when we want to work for that.
What I think would be awesome is hearing about going for the parts, which ones you wanted, which ones you didn't get, what motivates you as a performer, etc.
Plus, you never know if a fellow Steemian is in the area where one of your performances are and will be able to come watch - free promotion of sorts.
That is awesome about Reservoir Dogs! Break a leg!
It's an interesting concept and I will definitely think about it. But knowing that someone I know is watching me makes me even more critical of my performance. I get really nervous when family or friends come to watch but I do this because they encouraged me at a young age when I had a lot of problems with public speaking. You would think I would be a pro at it now, but nerves hits everyone.
As for the callback, I'm a little more nervous because they are deciding on which part they are wanting me to audition for, so I could be there doing a cold slate read for multiple parts to see which one they think I could pull off better. I may write about that experience afterwards and see if I get the part!
Thanks for the notice .. good post happy friend (=

In this movie, the jokes are relentless and clever. charaters are all around fleshed out with every indivisual playing a physical iverse of their person outside of jumanji.
Jumanji sure is worth watching! Its filled with exciting adventures and really funny scenes (expect fun wherever Kevin and Dwayne are).
It get me glued to my screen while watching it.
Hello very well done review. Im a big fan of the original movie i use to watch it as a child so i wasnt expecting anything from this one. It was ok for me not but but not really good either. I totally agree that it is missing robin Williams character's charm:)he was such a great actor.
