When it comes to sci-fi movies, people all think of aliens, robots, outer space monsters, etc.

However, there is still another inspiration for this genre – witch. It’s believed that witches did exist in various cultures. While some witches are considered to be good and are in charge of important spiritual ceremonies in some countries, others were hung because people thought that these witches were the servants of Satan or demons. If you take a look back the history, there were lots of events related to witches. That’s why this character also becomes an inspiration of sci fi fantasy movies.
One prominent representative of these movies is The Witch. It’s a supernatural horror film directed by Robert Eggers. So, besides some fictional details, you also experience a little horror from The Witch. This movie is a product of international cooperation between the U.S and Canada. It was debuted on January 27, 2015, at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Different from other horror fiction movies, this movie brings us back to 1950s sci fi movies. This movie doesn’t have jump scare scenes, bloody demons or ghosts. It’s even not based on any true story. It attracts viewers because of the dark and obsessed plot, the dead atmosphere, the fear of people, etc. The movie is a folk tale from normal people’s point of view. Robert Eggers created a typical fight between God and demons.

The Witch is about original sin and folklore terror. It’s a story of 17th century England when people live with the fear of wicked witch who comes and steals their children and their souls. So, they pray to God every day. The story focuses on a family. They leave their New World community to live on the edge of the civilization. They build a farm near a large and dark forest. In the meantime, the wife – Katherine has a newborn son – Samuel. One day, the baby disappears, and no one knows what happened. Katherine feels devastated and spends her days crying and praying, while her husband – William makes sure that a wolf stole the baby. Katherine thinks that their older daughter – Thomasin has to take responsibilities of the disappearance of Samuel. Then, their next son Caleb also disappears in the wood. And, once again, Katherine blames on Thomasin. And, she also thinks that Thomasin is a witch or at least serves the witches.
The director was successful when he tried to convey the invisible fear to the audience. First of all, the background of this movie is full of darkness and fear when The Witch depicts an era which people believe in God, demons, hell, and heaven.

Then, he also brought into the movie precious details that refer to the existence of evil things. For instance, the appearance of Black Philip which is a muscle black goat, this character represents for demons. He asks Thomasin to live deliciously and materialize into a tall, dark man. He also guides Thomasin to join a coven of witches. The fear in this movie is different from other free sci fi movies where you feel afraid when you see terrible or bloody creatures. The fear in this movie is untouchable. It takes control Katherine slowly to make her crazy and think her daughter is a witch. The viewers feel the fear because they don’t know what kind of demons exists in this movie and the large forest but narrow awareness of people.
