MAUDIE (movie review): When people don't like it if you're different; What kind of beauty do you have?

in #movie6 years ago (edited)

I have always been a fan of Ethan Hawke's films ever since and this one came across when I was looking for something to watch earlier. I guess I've already seen most of his movies but I haven't heard of this one yet, so I gave it a try. I thought it was a bit slow at first, but surprisingly, it got more interesting later on.

This biopic film is about a woman, who everyone (including her family) thought she's different and can't take care of herself. It is not a story of a high society woman. She's one of those people somewhat ignored, mistreated or rejected for being different. Her family ditched her, she doesn't have social skills and you'd thought her future isn't so bright. However, she too wants a normal life like everybody else. So, she left her home and decided to be a housekeeper of the man who sells fish. They found and thought they needed each other, but Ethan (Everett) was quite rigid with her at first. Eventually, this arthritic woman made a difference on his life through her paintings. She became famous for being artistic despite her condition. But, it's not the end of the story. It has a heartrending twist on the latter part that will definitely move you.

I admired Sally Hawkins' excellent performance on her role as Maudie and I think not anyone is capable of doing it, not even a famous one. She delivered it well and would surely touch one's soul about what makes you really beautiful. The world didn't give this woman much, but then, not much was required to make her happy - just a window to look out at the world. What I loved about her character is that she has this gift for seeing the greatest beauty in the simplest things. In the end, Maudie humbly accepts her recognition as an artist, but much more important to her is the work she made of her life. She says simply, “I was loved.”

Reality speaking, no matter how beautiful you are or what status you have in life, sometimes all you need is to be loved, recognized and accepted for who you are. It just takes someone special to see and know what you're capable of and help nourish the beauty inside you. We are all unique on our own ways, we just have to discover our skills, strengths, talents and capabilities as a person, beautifully made by God.

Such an inspiring movie! I highly recommend this film to you guys as it teaches a lot of life lessons. The cinematography makes the engaging story even more beautiful.

That's all and thank you for reading!

Until next time. :)
