Mother! (2017) - Movie Review - Darren Aronofsky
I walked into “Mother” without knowing much besides the fact that Darren Aronofsky was the director. Aronofsky is not known for making simple films and this one is no different. In fact, it’s one of the most challenging films I’ve seen all year. I walked out scratching my head with more questions and respect for this masterful filmmaker.
Mother was billed as a horror film. It’s much less horrific as it is uncomfortable. Jennifer Lawrence’s character, Mother, deals with a string of disrespectful and unwanted guests as they make her home theirs. She has painstakingly rebuilt each part of the house from wall to wall and breathed new life into it following a tragic fire. Aronofsky conditions the audience to feel a certain level of cringe every time the doorbell rings.
Everything we experience in this film is from Mother’s perspective. The film uses three main camera angles. Over the shoulder, point of view, and close up. All working to help us identify with mother. To help us feel her uncomfort, her pain, and very rarely her joy.
This film has so far flopped at the boxoffice earning only $7.5 million opening weekend and receiving an “F” from Cinema Score. That “F” could be considered a badge of honor as other critical favorites like “Solaris” (Soderbergh, 2002), a favorite of mine, earned the same score. This film obviously isn’t for everyone but I do think it will stick with you regardless if you immediately enjoy it.
I don’t want to get too deep into the allegory of it as it really is a pleasure to peel the onion yourself. Just Keep in mind this is a challenging film and you may leave the theater confused and angry but that’s ok. In fact, you could argue that is the purpose.
Have you seen this film? What did you think?
This reminded me that I really wanted to watch this movie. The fact that so many have not liked it makes me think it might just be my cup of tea. :-)
Yeah, I thought it was a really great film. Let me know what you think when you watch it.
I haven't watched it. My wife saw it and did not care for it. She received her Moviepass two months ago. I am still waiting for mine. :(
I'm still waiting on mine too. This one was a full price ticket!
Mine arrived today.
