Flatliners Movie Review

Flatliners is a remake of a violent 1990 thriller of the same name. As in the original, this film focuses on five medical students who attempt to find out what happens after death by experiencing death themselves. One student, Courtney (Ellen Page), tells her classmates that she wants to understand what happens in the afterlife, and the only way to do it is by stopping and restarting her heart. One by one, each of the students goes through the process, returning to life changed forever and haunted by the consequences. Expect violence, intense scenes, and some sexual content, likely making this one best for older teens and up.

The film is directed byNiels Arden Oplev, famous Danish director whose career has been brewing between film and television. After directing the short film "Nøgen" (1992), it made debut in the film "Portland" (1997), a criminal drama that received good critics getting nominated to the gold bear in the International Festival of Berlin. After this work he spent a few years on television where he directed the documentary "Headbang i Hovedlandet", a film about the world of heavy metal in Denmark, and participated in the direction of several chapters for the TV series "Taxa" (1997) And "Rejseholdet" (2000). For those years, also directed the comedy "Fukssvansen" (2001) and participated in the direction of chapters for the television series "Forsvar" (2003). After this period in television directed the film "Drømmen" (2006), a family drama that received excellent critics, obtaining to gain a great amount of prizes and nominations in different festivales of cinema. In parallel, he also directed several chapters for the series "Ørnen: En krimi-odyssé" (2004), a crime drama and mystery that also received good reviews. Later, she directed the romantic drama "To verdener" (2008), film focused on a young Jehovah's Witness who falls in love with someone who is not a believer. The film also received excellent reviews. A year later came the opportunity to direct Män som hatar kvinnor (2009), adaptation to the cinema of the first part of the trilogy "Millenium" by the Swedish writer Stieg Larsson. Due to the great success of the novel and of the film, a year later, also was in charge of directing the television adaptation of the mentioned novel, released under the name of "Millennium" (2010), the series received the Emmy 2011 International to the Best non-English language miniseries. After this project, continued working in television to direct several chapters of the American series "Unforgettable" (2011). Two years later, he directed the action thriller Dead Man Down (2013), an American production film starring Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace and Dominic Cooper. That same year, Oplev directed the pilot episode of "Under the Dome" (2013), a science fiction series broadcast on CBS and based on a Stephen King novel. After this work returned to the cinema directing "Kapgang" (2014), a familiar drama produced in Denmark. After this independent film, Oplev returned to the American television to direct a chapter for the successful series "Mr. Robot "(2015), and the pilot episodes of Game of Silence (2016) and Midnight, Texas" (2016).

WHAT'S THE STORY?
Five medical students, hoping to unravel the mystery of what awaits beyond the confines of life, undertake a daring and dangerous experiment. By stopping your heart for a brief span of time, each of them experiences a near-death experience. As research becomes increasingly dangerous, they will be forced to confront the sins of their past, as well as dealing with the paranormal consequences of their incursions into the hereafter.
