Movie Review: Doc Hollywood

in #movie7 years ago (edited)

One of my favorite movies and actually my favorite Michael J. Fox movie. This movie is considered a romantic comedy and was released in August 1991. It was directed by Michael Caton-Jones and written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. It is based on the book, What? Dead...Again?, by Neil B. Shulman. It was shot on location in Micanopy, Florida.
There are a few very recognizable stars in this movie: Michael J. Fox, Julie Warner, David Ogden Stiers, Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda. Even George Hamilton has a small part.
It cost about $17 million to make and made approximately $55 million at the box office. The length of the movie is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
There is about a minute or so of nudity, the breasts of Julia Warner and some long distance bush, when she first meets Dr. Stone (Michael J Fox).

The movie is about a surgeon from Washington DC, getting ready to leave for Los Angeles CA to become a plastic surgeon because it makes a ton more money and no one dies. On the way in his 1956 Speedster he encounters a very long traffic jam, but notices a side road that is open. He takes that, but gets lost and misses his exit to the highway. As he is adjusting his radio, he encounters cows in the road and swerves to miss them only to wipe out a fence. A fence that is being built by the judge of the local town of Grady, South Carolina. (Grady is a fictional town, but I'd love to live in a town like that one). He is tried and sentenced to 32 hours of doctor work at the local hospital. After getting drunk with the old ladies, he wakes up and heads outside for some fresh air. That's where in encounters Julia Warner and her nudity. It's a very entertaining encounter.
He then reports back at the hospital and finds out that he must talk with an ambulance driver named Lou, to show him around. Lou turns out to be short for Vialula and it is Julia Warner. He tries his city ways on her, but they don't work. All he wants to do is leave, but he needs to wait until his community service is up and his car is fixed.
He has a bad encounter during his first day as a doctor, almost sending a boy for some unnecessary surgery. The old local doctor, Dr. Hogue (Barnard Hughes) shows up and belittles him.
He does whatever he can to go on a date with Lou and gets an opportunity at the house of the mayor (David Ogden Stiers) and his daughter Nancy Lee (Bridget Fonda). Hank (Woody Harrelson), another suitor for Lou is at that party as is Dr. Hogue.
I've left out several things, so not to spoil it for you, but Dr. Stone does end up leaving for LA evidently. Not in his car though because it was wrecked a second time after he stopped to deliver a baby in the back of a station wagon.
Oh, I forgot about the pig he received for payment on his doctoring services.
Obviously, I recommend the movie and think it should be watched several times.
