Blade Runner: a vision of our near future?

An absolute masterpiece of science fiction cinema, an avant-garde and not easy to understand film, Blade Runner launches a prediction of what the Earth will be today. Considering that it was shot in 1982 and that the setting is Los Angeles in 2019, Ridley Scott's direction offers an interpretation, in my view negative, of technological progress and the impact it could have on humans.

In Blade Runner technology has produced androids, robots with human features, able to develop greater strength and to be able to work even in extreme conditions on other colonized planets. Androids have been developed to last for 4 years and some defective models may decide to flee the colonies in which they are held to shelter elsewhere, including the Earth itself. Here are android hunters including Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), an almost retired agent, who is tasked with recovering and destroying a group of rebels hidden in Los Angeles and led by Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer).

The film is a complaint against the possible consequences that man will have to pay for his greed: the planet Earth of Blade Runner has become a large, polluted dustbin, in which all those who have not had the opportunity to move into the new colony have remained for lack of money, for poor physical and health conditions or for crimes.

The man himself identifies himself as a machine devoid of emotions, of hopes, now enclosed in a box without light and escape routes. Even the animals present in the reality of Ridley Scott are synthetic, extinct due to excessive consumption or pollution itself.

The soundtrack is curated by Vangelis and expresses innovative, futuristic, computerized sounds that blend well with the plot and the setting of the film. The scenography and the photography are very accurate, with purely dark settings and dirty, abandoned places, ideal representation of the common man in Blade Runner.

The film did not immediately receive much approval. The making of the film cost a budget that was almost 10% higher than what was contractually established and this determined the almost dismissal of Ridley Scott. A few years later, Blade Runner has become a cult film and one of the most representative of the 80s.

Capolavoro assoluto del cinema di fantascienza, un film all'avanguardia e non di facilissima comprensione, Blade Runner lancia una previsione di ciò che sarà la Terra ai giorni nostri. Considerato che è stato girato nel 1982 e che l'ambientazione è Los Angeles del 2019, la regia di Ridley Scott offre un'interpretazione, a mio modo di vedere negativa, del progresso tecnologico e dell'impatto che potrebbe avere sull'uomo.

In Blade Runner la tecnologia ha prodotto androidi, robot dalle sembianze umane, in grado di sviluppare una forza maggiore e di poter lavorare anche in condizioni estreme su altri pianeti colonizzati. Gli androidi sono stati sviluppati per avere una durata di 4 anni e alcuni modelli difettati possono decidere di fuggire dalle colonie in cui sono detenute per ripararsi altrove, tra cui la Terra stessa. Qui ci sono cacciatori di androidi tra cui Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), un agente quasi in pensione, a cui viene affidato il compito di recuperare e distruggere un gruppo di ribelli nascosti a Los Angeles e guidati da Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer).

Il film è una denuncia alle possibili conseguenze che l'uomo dovrà pagare per la propria avidità: il pianeta Terra di Blade Runner è diventata una grande pattumiera, inquinata, in cui sono rimasti tutti coloro che non hanno avuto la possibilità di trasferirsi nella nuova colonia per mancanza di denaro, per scarse condizioni fisiche e di salute o per reati.

L'uomo stesso si identifica come una macchina priva di emozioni, di speranze, oramai richiuso in una scatola senza luce e vie di fuga. Persino gli animali presenti nella realtà di Ridley Scott sono sintetici, estinti a causa dell'eccessivo consumo o per l'inquinamento stesso.

La colonna sonora è curata da Vangelis ed esprime suoni innovativi, futuristici, computerizzati che ben s'intonano con la trama e l'ambientazione del film. La scenografia e la fotografia sono molto curate, con ambientazioni prettamente scure e luoghi sudici, abbandonati, rappresentazione ideale dell'uomo comune in Blade Runner.

Il film non ricevette sin da subito un gran consenso. La realizzazione del film costò un budget superiore di quasi il 10% a quanto stabilito contrattualmente e ciò determinò il quasi licenziamento di Ridley Scott. A distanza di pochi anni, Blade Runner è diventato un film cult e tra i più rappresentativi degli anni '80.
