What Oscars 2019 taught us.

in #movie6 years ago

The Oscar-winning night has come, flashed and gone down in history. For many people, this evening could have been a surprise, for others, it was a proof that watching the Academy's awards there is not much room for surprises. Looking at yesterday night, I can say that we learned a few things. Some were nice, some predictable and some of us will have to think about it.

We have learned that the leader is not absolutely necessary- the big discussion that took place before the awards were distributed was around the lack of the host. Initially, the gala was to be led by Kevin Hart but after the controversy he gave up and the Academy did not find a replacement. At the beginning Queen appeared with Adam Lambert. This is a solution for the lack of a lecturer but for a short-term. The second solution that the Academy decided to use was the leading talent - Melissa McCarthy in a costume with rabbits turned out to be a great interlude showing that you do not need witty dialogue if a man has a sweet rabbit-shaped puppet. But seriously, I am convinced that if next year the Academy decided to run it still - Trevor Noah (who announced one of the films at the gala) is perfect. No less after the entire gala you can say - it's surprising how much we did not lack host, and how much does not bother us when Julia Roberts in a beautiful pink dress tell you that it's time to go home.

We've learned that Oscar songs make sense on the condition that it's not about the song - as every year the discussion about Oscar songs shared the admirers of the ceremony. Some understood the Academy's decision to cut the musical performances slightly, others pointed out that it was not polite to sing only three of the five nominated songs. However, no matter how many songs were finally made - there is no doubt that the most attention of the audience attracted the performance of Shallow by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. In the end, as always - no one at the Oscars was singing completely clean and the prize went to Shallow, which is not surprising. It was certain that Shallow had to get an Oscar for the best song and that Lady Gaga would be crying when she picks her up.

We have learned that all awards should go to British actresses- There are many reasons for this happiness. Olivia Colman's role was perfect. Olivia is perfect. But the most amazing part was her speech. There was everything that viewers in front of TV sets were waiting for. There was British distance and disbelief that sounded true. There was a sense of humor that made us all feel like we had known Olivia for years. There were prints for tears - not a husband but a director, because Yorgos Lanthimos genuinely cried. There were really nice words addressed to the family. And the sentence, which is one of those that is kept in mind, when Olivia said she was once a the cleaning lady, and that she liked this job but she prefers to get an Oscar. Because, let's not hide the whole speech had the spirit of a woman who expected a lot in life, but the fact that she has an Oscar in hand is very funny for her. In general, it was the moment that made me feel the greatest joy. I've been following an actress's career for years and I can not get enough of it that Hollywood has noticed and appreciated it. And I'm so sad that Glenn Close did not get this incredibly well-deserved Oscar, but if someone was to take her statuette, let it be Olivia.

We have learned that gravity does not spare the Oscar-winning actors- Rami Malek after winning the Oscar, fell a little from the stage, as the media reported - which required medical help. However, before Malek stumble, he could say thank to the Academy for the Oscar for the leading role. I will not hide - I did not like Bohemian Rhapsody. However, I will not complain about Malek's victory. For many reasons. First of all - it was a demanding role, and I admit honestly - I doubt whether any actor would have been accused of simply imitating Freddie Mercure. In general, playing Freddie Mercure sounds like a frightening task - there were fewer charismatic and distinctive characters in the history of popular culture. Secondly - the prize for Malek is a huge step in the representation among the awarded actors. Malek, a descendant of Egyptian emigrants, is one of very few actors, with roots from the Middle East that the Academy has noticed. Thirdly - Malek speech was really beautiful.

We've learned how close the season's finale to the Oscar statuette is- for Mahershala Ali 24.02 was extremely important - TV viewers could decide - whether they watch the final of the third season of True Detective with the actor in the lead role, or watch as the first black actor, receive the second Oscar for the supporting role in Green Book. This close-up of dates and spaces in which the actor appears shows us clearly that today Hollywood is not so much heading to television as actually living in it, and viewers probably better associate the winners from the series than from films. This is a process that has been going on for years but this year this decision - where we want to see Ali - at the Oscars ceremony, celebrating a film career, or in the HBO series seems very symptomatic. Ultimately, regardless of what we decided, there is no doubt that Mahershala Ali is one of those actors who suddenly appear on the list of the most hot names in the dream factory and then they do not disappoint. Plus, since we're talking about representation - Mahershala still belongs to a small group of Academy Award-winning Muslims. Anyway, just TV appearances of the awarded stars may be a leitmotiv this year because Rami Malek is best known for Mr. Robot and Olivia Colman played a supporting role in BBC’s Les Miserables during the week in which nominations were announced.

We've learned that good research pays back in- the Black Panther Awards - for music, decorations and costumes, it's really rewards for the amazing preparation of the filmmakers. Everyone spent a lot of time researching the cultures of the African continent so that they would be reflected in the costumes, spaces and sound of the film. For the European viewer, this may seem to be an unimportant or insignificant task. However, taking into account, as usual, without respect and neglect, African cultural performances are treated in films and popular series, we are dealing here with a very important phenomenon and worth appreciating. Among other things, this respectful creation of the world made the film so popular and gave viewers a starting point to seek information about the cultures of various African countries, tribes and ethnic groups.

We've learned that Mexico is closer to the US - Roma Cuaron is a readable film for American viewers. Cuaron got the statuette for the best foreign language film - the first in the history of Mexican cinema, which is a scandal when we think about what a fantastic and varied cinematography Mexico has. The awards for the best direction as well as the best photos went to Cuaron as well. On the other hand - Cuaron made this film as if it was done by Lubezka and the Academy loves this style with all its heart. Ultimately, the rewards for Roma do not surprise me or worry me. It's still a bit of a miracle that a black-and-white, non-English film about childhood memories in Mexico has come so far on the Oscars.

We've learned that the Academy does not like Thanos - the award for First Man for special effects is another award of the Academy in this category that goes to the film where special effects were important but not crucial for the story. Despite numerous nominations for popular cinema, the least and the least spectacular film was again awarded. This is an interesting phenomenon, these rewards for special effects because one can get the impression that the most difficult is the awarding of prizes in technical terms when people unrelated to the technique vote. I have the impression that this is one of those awards that very rarely has a chance to hit a movie that from a technical point of view really deserves it the most. No less generally, the First Man team is glad that even one prize went to this film, which lost in the Oscars season.

We've learned that if you wait twenty years for the prize then you have something to say - Spike Lee lived to see his first Oscar statuette yesterday, when he took out a few yellow cards from his pocket, probably many people in the audience prepared for an acute political speech. Meanwhile, Lee talked about politics - it's hard to forgive himself, but at the same time - his speech did not resemble voices that could be heard two years ago when many people felt the duty to say straight that Trump is bad. Lee spoke about certain mechanisms and not necessarily about names. In general - it was a much more polite speech than I expected. And the history will probably remember only the moment when this very small director, after entering the stage, jumped into the arms of Samuel L. Jackson, which was so absolutely charming that it is impossible not to smile at the mere mention.

We've learned that the Academy can do a lot of things but it will not read- in fact, the Green Book victory has been talked about for some time. And this should not come as a surprise because it is a film which won in Toronto one of the best forecasters of the Oscar win. Personally, I do not feel disappointed but I understand why this is a problematic victory. For me - it is a sad fact that in the year when we had two very feminine films nominated - telling stories about women from a woman's perspective, eventually won the movie again in which the woman is on the second or even third plan. In the States, the film is a lively discussion mainly because it deals with racists stereotypes in a way that is very nice to watch for white people but not necessarily as comfortable for black people. Although you can also put aside some controversy and enjoy that won the movie with a good message.

We've learned that looking for a new way is a good idea - the first results of the audience show that this year's gala was watched by more people than a year earlier. Probably part of them decided to watch out of curiosity how the show will look without a leader, some came to see if the Black Panther will win. Personally, I think that the discussions on the shape of the Oscar gala are crucial because the gala needs to change. This year had its advantages - it was efficient, fast and had a good pace. There were not as many stoppages or embarrassing fragments as in recent years. This does not mean, that the same recipe will work out in a year's time. But they must definitely look for a new idea for an Oscars if the Academy wants to admit them to the end of the world and one movie longer.

We've learned that there are a lot of ways to the Oscar- when I look at the pictures of the winners, I see a wider group of people who can be successful in Hollywood. Rami Malek is a son of emigrants from Egypt, not long ago known mainly from television, Olivia Colman, phenomenal British actress who proves that typical Hollywood beauty is not needed when we have a brilliant comedy and drama talent. Regina King, a black actress who in her forties suddenly gets the role of life that drives her to the stars and Oscars. But also a producer fighting for equality behind the camera. And finally, Mahershala Ali, a black Muslim who suddenly jumped from the roles that no one associated with being the first black actor with two statuettes for the roles in the supporting role. I look at them and think that I would like a cinema like this and if Hollywood like this. It is not necessarily like that. But sometimes it pretends to be beautiful. And so it is important where they come from and what their skin color is. Not because it conflicts with their talent, but because it was unthinkable for them to reach for prizes and probably have to fight a lot more for their place in the entertainment industry. It is very easy not to see it when you are white, but when we look at people from the film industry, we notice that if we do not speak and do not appreciate minorities, usually nothing changes. This is important from which environments and groups the future winners (and nominated for the Academy Awards). It is important for the groups from which they come (giving them new horizons of ambition and representation), it is important for the environment, ultimately important for how cinema shows humanity. Recognition of this does not contradict appreciation for their roles and acting abilities. Because there is no contradiction here. Rather double satisfaction.

The fact that Alfonso and Olivia both won, the rest of the show was a joke.

PS: Spike should've won way before this year but Oscars are embarrassing

Julia Roberts was stunning with hot pink!

I guess Oscars is now growing pretty much in terms of credibility and integrity. It will be much more exciting in the coming years or decades to come.
Thanks for your thoughts on Oscars 2019!

Oscars was always something more than only a movie industry so maybe it's time to change that and focus on the main subject like good movies not a political or social events in the US. People's need a really good and valuable entertainment not only reality shows.

Yeah.
And its been boring that the event is always in the US.
I guess they may consider other countries as well as venue.
