THE WITCH [2015] MOVIE-REVIEW

in #movie-review8 years ago

The depiction of the figure of the witch itself has variations of each incarnation. Usually they are portrayed live alone in the woods while carrying an apple as its main attribute.

The Witch "This is the work of Robert Eggers. As a pioneering work, Robert Eggers brings a familiar theme is becoming more refreshing. We did many know about the film that tells the story about a witch. But how storytelling performed by Robert Eggers here (and screenwriter), really gives a new color.

The Witch "is not spoken spectacle, there are also scenes of battle between magicians with action involving over-the-top. The plot is also likely to slow. This film depicted with darker and heavier storytelling.

Aspects successfully applied in the film is the tone setting; like scoring the music of Mark Korven the haunting until the construction of the set. The film is set in New England in the 17th century, the redevelopment of the location is so awesome. Gloomy, tense, filled with a lot of smoke as if the cities being condemned. I also like all the costume design.

The focus in "The Witch" is a Puritan family were evicted from their homes. They were expelled because of a difference of view with the church where they live. The family consisted of William (Ralph Ineson), Katherine (Kate Dickie) wife, Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) eldest son, Caleb (Harvey Scrimshaw) a second child, and the last of the twins.

From plantation areas, they moved into a vacant lot near the forest. They built a ranch there. During his stay there, the Williams family blessed with the birth of the baby. But one day, the baby was missing when they were invited to play by Thomasin. William family overcome with grief. They believe, wolves had devoured him.

After losing most young children, the relationship between family members began tenuous. Friction began to feel that ultimately led to the Thomasin blame for the loss of his brother. From a religious family and get along well, they are now facing an internal conflict at any time can be a time bomb.

Behind the witches and supernatural themes of his, Robert Eggers family dysfunction accidentally entered the conflict here. Can be felt, this family clutter comes from a sense of distrust each other as a starting point of collapse. Its main base is about "lies," which usually films conflicted family dysfunction always put in it.

Robert Eggers very subtle in incorporating it into the film. Indeed, if not observant, we will only consider "The Witch" as well as the horror of the other witches. Proficiency Robert Eggers exist in neatly puts it in conflict. He perfected the property required in horror as its template wizard. That way, the audience does not consciously see drama about the chaos in the family.

"The Witch" themed films or other witches always left a moral message to the audience. Especially for an audience of children: "Never take candy from home in the middle of the woods."

So here I am instructed to you all, be careful with the home / small cottage in the woods. Never approached, knocked on the door, let alone get into it. Who knows in which there is a witch ... I'm sorry, I'm kidding.
