THE ULTIMATE EXIT STRATEGY

in #motivation7 years ago

Hey

Ever notice how most people are terrible at setting… and sticking to their goals?

They tell themselves thinly-veiled excuses like:

“I’ll start my business when I have more free time.”
“I’ll hit the gym after the holidays.”
“I’ll ask her out when it’s the perfect time.”
And?

They never, ever, in a million years end up doing that super important thing. The thing that they NEED to do to achieve their most pressing desires in life.

Frankly, this happens to almost everyone I know. It’s something you’ve probably been doing your entire life...

I think it’s because we all secretly want to believe we’re immortal.

Know what I mean?

Most people make decisions AS IF they’re going to live forever.

Well - here’s the thing:

That “immortality” mindset is insidious. And if you allow it to block you from chasing your goals… you’re doomed to a life of mediocrity.

Personally, I find that frightening. (And I bet you do too.)

So today, I’m going to give you a harsh dose of reality… to exterminate that mentality from your mind.

How?

I’m going to help teach you the kind of critical self-awareness you NEED if you want to accomplish a badass goal like becoming a multi-millionaire in the next 5 years.

So pay attention, because this could be the most valuable 5 minute read of your life.

Okay, let’s dive into it:
First off - check out this chart Tim Urban at waitbutwhy put together: unnamed.png
(This huge grid is your life - measured in weeks.)

Each row represents 1 year and each square represents 1 week in that year. Read across the top line and you’ll see we get 52 weeks in each year.

The entire block contains the total number of weeks you might get in your life - from the time you’re a wriggling baby to the day you become a senior in a squeaky wheelchair.

That’s 4,680 weeks if you’ve done the math.

So where do YOU sit on the chart today?

Now, if you’re in your twenties or thirties, that massive expanse of squares staring at you might make you think you’ve got a LOT of time to reach your goals.

BUT looks can be deceiving. And here’s why:

Even though the typical lifespan of Americans is 76 for men and 81 for women… not everyone gets the same amount of time.

Take a look at this next graph:
unnamed (1).png

Note: a shorter life span for the few nasty characters here is definitely a PLUS.

However, notice how many of the biggest icons, bad asses and legends died at a relatively young age?

After the long, long hours and hard work they sacrificed to get “discovered” (something the myth of overnight success glosses over.)

Most of these legends lives were stopped short by decades before they had a chance to truly enjoy their success...

Don’t wanna get too morbid here… but the brutal truth is that the “window” of time you have to “make a dent in the universe” may be rapidly closing.

Just ask Steve Jobs. (Oops you can’t).

That means every week you lose binge watching your favourite Netflix series or making your thumbs numb on Call Of Duty…

Is another week your goals are closer to biting the dust.

Here’s what I wish somebody had ACTUALLY told me:

“Listen, you can either sit in a squeaky wheelchair in your 80s… looking back in regret on what you didn’t do with your life.

OR you can use every single week you have available to you RIGHT NOW to hustle in silence and let success make the noise.

Which one do you want to choose?”

The answer should be obvious…. Even with death knocking at our door, WAY too many of us still hesitate when the path forward is so clear.

So here’s another question to light a fire under your ass:

Where will YOU be -- 6 months from now -- if you keep wasting your time?

Will you be dragging yourself to another coma-inducing 9am lecture?

Will you be putting in hard time, handcuffed to an entry level job that barely pays the rent?

Will you turn into yet another coffee-slurping wantrepreneur who talks big, but lives small?

OR will you…
