Push Yourself Outside of Your Comfort Zone

It’s human nature to do what makes us comfortable. People don’t generally like to go outside of their comfort zone for a multitude of reasons. Whether, we were burnt on it in sports growing up or had a big idea shot down at work…it’s always easier to stay in your comfort zone. When you look at the landscape of extremely successful people it's likely that they have pushed themselves out of their comfort zone to get to where they're at today. Leaving your comfort zone can have major developmental benefits.

Easier Road at Work

There’s an old saying “it’s not what you know but who you know that matters”. This is true in every facet of life. Taking time and showing interest in the higher ups at your work can make your life easier. By building these relationship, they will consider you for promotions, new initiatives and possibly seek your advice. When your name comes up in a group of names competing for a new role, yours will stand out. It never hurts to have someone with influence in your corner.

New Ventures

If you’re reading this Blog chances are…you’re open to new ventures. By going out and meeting people who are more successful, have more experience, and more connections you open yourself up to their network. If these people like and respect you they will think of you when a new venture that involves your skill set opens up. At times, they may bring you into an opportunity where you don’t have a particular skill set just for an opportunity to work with you.

Business Referrals

Depending on your line of work you may be able to leverage referrals out of these relationships. Coming from a stock broker background I know how truly valuable these referrals can be. Imagine never having to make another cold call…what a thought. Successful people almost always have large networks and are generally open to sharing them provided they have faith in the person that they’re referring people to.

Mentorship

Building a relationship with someone who has a different and vastly larger skill set can end up in mentorship. It’s an opportunity that can be priceless with the right mentor. Imagine, as an example, wanting to get into real estate. That can be hard for anyone. It becomes much easier when you have someone who has a successful track record advising you on pitfalls to avoid as well as best practices.

Job Opportunities

As I previously mentioned, successful people often have large networks. There’s always an opportunity that a friend’s company is hiring. These people won’t hesitate to recommend you if you’re a good fit. That has a lot of power because not only are you more likely to get the job but you now have an inside connection to your new boss. This means that your ideas and requests will be taken more seriously and thus more likely to happen.

These are just a few examples of how powerful pushing yourself out of your comfort zone with people can benefit you. There are many more and the benefits are truly unlimited.
