What is Success?

The pursuit for success is a constant thing in life, every man wants to be successful in their different life endeavours. One thing that I have noticed that every human tend to agree on is the fact that success is good. Although we might have different opinions of what success is, but then no matter our opinion, we all want to be successful.

Some school of thought have defined success as the achievement or accomplishment of an aim or a set objective. To some others, success is the status of having achieved desired visions and planned goals, while to some other group, success is a social status that describes an individual who has gotten to the peak in his/her career or pursuit, has attained fame, and is living a life of luxury.

One might ask; which one is the true definition of success?

The only person that can correctly answer the question above is YOU. No one is able to give the ultimate definition of success, because we all think differently about what success is, and define it innour own way, hence there can't be a universal definition of success that will suit everybody. While to some success means living a life of luxury, driving top end cars and living on resorts,, to some others it is great academic exploits, some others might see it as having a beautiful and well groomed family, while to some others success is achieved by helping others. The most important thing is that we identify and understand our set goals in life, then we can define success and work towards that.

How do we measure success?

One of the most important keys or factors to measuring how successful you are in life is by understanding the meaning of success in your personal life. The true measure of success exceeds the common pointers of success such as having lots of money, owning and living in luxury apartments, driving fancy cars, pursuing and bagging prestigious degrees and awards, being famous, having thousands of followers on Steemit, etc. All the above listed pointers amount to the three basic parameters which the society have created for the measurement of success, and they are: money, power and status, but this is totally wrong, because this three mainstream parameters for the measurement of success have created a completely imbalanced perception of success.

WHAT THEN IS THE TRUE MEASURE OF SUCCESS?
True success cannot be measure by power, money and status, it is nit equated to the trophies that people collect in their lives, rather true success can be measured with the amount of people that are positively affected by those things you've created, those whose life become better as a result of the trophies you've collected in life. Below are a few parameters that truly measures real/good success.

• The positive impact you have on others.

When you get to the top, help as many people as you can to join you at the top.

The desire to acquire wealth and amass material possessions drives a large number of people. As a result,they do not care the consequences of their actions and how it affects people around them, their actions are predominantly centered on the fulfillment of their desires. All that matters to them is that their actions provide lucrative outcomes, the moral outcome of their behavior does not matter to them, provided the intended purpose is attained. Some even manipulate and exploit others just to accomplish their idea of success. In today's society, these people are still considered as very successful. How can a person that intentionally make other people disadvantaged to achieve his goals be considered successful.

In the end, it’s not our wealth that is remembered of us after we are long gone. The wealth we leave behind, would be inherited by our families and soon all the wealth would be forgotten. What truly remains of us is the contribution we have made in life, the impact we had on other people’s lives. Our little contributions towards making this world a better place.

Helping other people and affecting their lives is the key characteristic of truly successful individuals, and a true measure of how successful you are.

• Facing obstacles with courage

True strength and willpower cannot be exhibited by those having it all rosy, those who are living on the bright side of life. True courage and strength comes to light during great adversity. When we are challenged the most, we discover our innermost strength and qualities. A great number of those seen as successful people fall during crises, but the truly successful remain standing. They might be shaken, but nevertheless face these difficulties with courage.

Against this backdrop, the measurement of successes in life has to include your ability to withstand and overcome serious obstacles. Don’t just measure success in respect to your accomplishments, also evaluate it by the amount of obstacles you were able to overcome.

• Contentment

All humans are continually in the pursuit of happiness in one way or the other, but unfortunately only a few do find true happiness. Most times, we erroneously assume that by acquiring material things, we will become happy, consequently, we desperately strive to attain happiness by pursuing more wealth at all cost.

What, we fail to understand is that true contentment and long-lasting happiness cannot come from this source. He more we seek to acquire to quench our thirst for happiness, the more we become insatiable and there will never be an end to our desires. Not to mention the fact that the happiness resulting from satisfying these desires are short.

A truly successful person would find contentment, peace and happiness no matter the in situation. Numerous individuals who are successful don’t find contentment in their accomplishments. They are always driven to strive for more, without ever truly attaining happiness.

Success should not only be based on what you have accomplished or achieved, but you should also find contentment in it.

Let me end with this note; in your pursuit for happiness, in your pursuit for greener pastures, as you pursue your set goals, ensure you don't get carried away by your greed, but ensure you allow your success to reflect your humanity".
