What is confidence? Is it the feeling of being better than others? Is it not being easily influenced by others? Is it not caring about what others think about you? Understanding what is confidence is important because naturally to gain confidence, we must first understand what it is.

According to dictionary.com , confidence is ‘the belief in oneself and one's powers or abilities.’

That is what confidence is, the belief that you are capable of doing something. When you have confidence you believe that you have the ability to perform something successfully.

Let's go deeper

Now let’s go a little deeper into it. If having confidence means having the belief that you have the capability to succeed at something, what does having belief mean?

​

Belief is basically a strong feeling of certainty you have about something. So having belief in your ability to succeed means you feel quite certain that you can achieve success.

Let's put it all together. wWat is confidence? To have confidence ultimately means that you have a feeling of certainty that you have the ability to succeed and can succeed in what you are attempting. Now note that it states that you ‘have a feeling of certainty’ rather than ‘having certainty’.

The reason I wanted to point this out is for it to be a reminder that there is no mention that having confidence is being absolutely certain of something. There are many people out there that equate having self confidence to having absolute certainty.

Well it’s no wonder why they always claim that they have no confidence, it’s because all the while they have been seeking for absolute certainty which doesn’t really exist.

From this we can understand that confidence is actually all about perception.

​

Confidence is not based solely on actual facts, rather it is based more on opinion. Some people need more references (i.e. indicators of success) for them to have a feeling of certainty about achieving success, while others may feel certain of success despite having very little, if any references to back them up.

The things that make one person feel confident may not matter at all to another person.

In a nutshell, the difference between a person who has confidence and a person who doesn’t have confidence may only boil down to their individual perception.

​

Two persons may have the same level of skill, experience, knowledge, ability, training etc but one may feel more confident than the other because she perceives that her current level of ability is sufficient to achieve success while the other person believes it isn’t sufficient.

Both will never know for sure whether their current capabilities are adequate until they actually attempt it for real. So by taking this into account for our daily lives, what you should do is prepare as much as you can, but to a certain extent, never let the perception of your confidence level stop you from attempting anything.

Dear friends who struggle with depression...

It's been a funky time recently. If you've been feeling "off" you're not alone!

Truth is, that feeling will always be there. Some days it's more noticeable than others. We feel... unaccomplished, stuck, lost, like we are drifting and our overall joy is depleted. Once we start to go down that rabbit hole, it's really hard to get ourselves out.

I've had some form of depression for as long as I can remember. Some days it just takes over and just getting the simplest task done can be so overwhelming it just doesn't get done.

I say all that to say, as quick as it is to allow yourself to go into the vortex of darkness with your thoughts, you can also shift your internal voice to say different things to you and bring yourself out of it. This is how I've told that dickhead depression to GTFO of my life. At the end of the day I picture depression as old me, because he was depression manifested. Overweight, unhappy, out of control, closed minded. I had everything going against me because I allowed the depression to talk to me so much it took over, my sadness became my reality because I gave that voice and character power to do so.

Time to try something new! Any time I'm feeling down like this or it starts to creep in, I say some powerful "I AM" statements and think of all I have going for me.

I AM WORTHY
I AM BLESSED
I AM WEALTHY (this has nothing to do with $)
I AM HEALTHY
I AM POWERFUL
I AM HAPPY
I AM WONDERFUL
I AM CREATIVE
I AM TALENTED
I AM LOVE(D)

These few statements have changed my outlook on life. I greet depression as a character of my mind and unwelcome guest. He's there and tries to whisper nonsense to me about how sad and unfulfilled I should feel. But FUCK that guy and FUCK his stupid mouth I don't have time for him today or any day. I'm a little hostile towards him because he had control for 28+ years and I will no longer allow access to my happiness.

It's always easier said than done when it comes to implementing these tools. But I encourage you to try to speak positivity into your life vs the negative messages thrown our way daily. Comparison is the thief of joy. You are not meant to live any other life but yours and we all have different paths to take. It takes time and intentional planning and mindfulness to be truly happy.

Happiness isn't some person, job or situation that will fall magically into your life, it is manifested within!
