Be True to Yourself

Be true to your self: Expectation Setting: Tell your students: "Be real to you." This phrase is a powerful quote that many's once said to young children. What does "be real to you" mean?


Discuss, write down, and critique the responses (the essence) of the students. Prompt them with the following questions: What does real mean? What would make you more real? What does "real" mean to you? What would you love to be able to do, be able to experience, or have?

You may also want to consider asking: What are your values, beliefs, hopes, dreams, talents and passions? What do YOU want to do for YOU? What is NOT true for YOU? Why do you need to change your "beliefs," your values, your hopes, your dreams, your talents and passions in order to live a more fulfilling life?

Teach your students how to become independent people. You can't make anyone do what YOU want, but you CAN teach them to become more self-reliant and self-sufficient. By setting expectations for your students and by making them aware of the importance of independent living, you can help your students become better, happier adults.

Be careful when teaching "Be True" to your students. Do not get carried away in the excitement of teaching your students how to be "true." It can become a habit, especially if you are an effective teacher.

Make sure that you give your students the freedom to pursue their dreams and passions without your having to pressure them into doing things you do not agree with. Let them learn on their own as they go along, but if they are being unruly, you can reprimand them and try to correct them by using consequences.

Never attempt to "be more real" for your students than they are for themselves. When students feel the need to be more real than they are, they will begin to believe that they can be everything you say they can be; they will begin to see things you do not see.

Be True to Yourself. In addition to being a great way to motivate students to learn and grow, Be True to Yourself encourages independent thinking and problem solving. and gives students a sense of power and independence.

When you are Be True to Yourself, your students will learn to take responsibility for their own decisions. They will learn that their future lies ahead of them, and that they have the power to create it. Their education will become a process of discovery. They will be able to make sense of the world around them, and see the connections between things.

When students become independent thinkers and problem solvers, they will be more open to learning new ideas and new perspectives. and more likely to be creative and innovative.

By teaching students taking responsibility for their own lives, you are helping them develop a sense of worth, and significance. that will help them achieve success and happiness later on.

Help them learn about how they can become successful in their chosen careers. This will give them a sense of pride and accomplishment when they leave college or the classroom.

Help them find their passion, and how to use what they know to make the most out of their lives. Be True to Yourself, and your students will flourish in the years to come.

Give them permission to be true to themselves. Your students will respect your decision to be true to yourself and will respect yours. When they respect you, they will listen to you and learn from you. and you will find that you have much more to offer them than they realize.


Be True to Yourself is the best tool for inspiring students to learn, grow, and become successful in their career. It is a powerful tool for encouraging students to overcome obstacles in life. Give students permission to Be True to Yourself. and your students will thank you. for it.
