In Yoruba Language an adage is translated thus
If the owner of a bowl doesn't treat it with detest, people wouldn't use it to pack rubbish.
The value people place on us is based on their estimation of how we value ourselves and how we value ourselves is based on how well we acknowledge, understand and appreciate who we really are.

I totally agree with your point, @evashinen. When you communicate yourself well to other people, respect almost always comes willingly. You needn't ask people for it.
