CROSS ROADS: IS IT THE GOVERNMENT OR THE YOUTH ARE JUST BEING LAZY?

Have you have ever found yourself in a cross road?

Have you ever been caught between two opinions?

Have you ever felt like the choice you made was way better or worse than the other choice you could have made?

More often than not, this is the situation the average Nigerian youth faces, especially before and after spending years in the university. The Nigerian system has left the leaders of tomorrow confused and without bearing or direction.

At secondary school level, no proper orientation is given to school kids as regards the variety of courses offered in the higher institution, steps aren't taken in the right direction to ensure these school kids are harnessed to push them to the right field of study where they naturally belong and less attention is being paid to the actual interest of these school kids.

So as a young boy or girl who just finished secondary school, he or she comes out with a very shallow knowledge of the courses offered in the university and aims for the popular ones he/she must have heard from friends or older siblings. Invariably, the competition for these so called popular courses such as medicine, law, pharmacy, engineering and the likes, becomes so high. The universities in turn, will decide to reduce the number of students competing for these popular courses as they cannot afford to take everyone due to lack of man-power/work force and facilities by increasing their admission cut of marks and pushing the few that managed to score points that's averagly close to the cut off marks to courses they never dreamed of.

Frustration, peer-pressure and parental treats to the intellectual capabilities of these kids in most cases, will however, force these young, bright but uninformed kids to take up these courses in the higher institution after years of constant attempts to pull through what I call "a battle for the fittest". This is a major cross road in the life of these kids that have been poorly crossed by majority and no one cares.

These set of now young adults, struggle through the university to understand what they have forcefully signed up for with nonchalant lecturers who are after the salary and not the intellectual welfare of these young adults.

Four, five or six years later, they emerge "GRADUATES"... Yes!, graduates indeed.

Then they are faced with another "CROSS ROAD" called "NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS" (NYSC), a one year program that is meant to place these now adults in firms, companies or organizations that corresponds to their various course of study in the higher institution in a bid to ensure they serve their father land. The system at this stage is expected to correct the errors it made in time past but instead of doing so, it worsens the situation of these now confused adults by placing them in another major cross road where they are allowed to take the wheel and drive to whatever direction that soothe them best.

How can a blind man walk alone?

Unconciously, the system keeps releasing bunch of confused adults who are supposed to make a change to the labor market each year and expect a miracle to happen in reviving the economic status of the nation.

HOW CAN WE MAKE IT RIGHT?

¶ Self development( which entails; being creative, innovative and smart)

¶ Enterprenuership

¶ Standing ones ground, regardless of parental and peer pressure

Listed above are the three key things we ought to do in order to correct the situation at hand. The system obviously doesn't work out for the good of all as fewer persons tend to survive the rough decision making and cross roads ever faced.

Don't ever feel like you can't correct past mistakes, a step today towards the right direction is a step towards a progressive change.

It's better late than never!

I thank God that someone else understands my point of view

Lovely write up
Even if the government is bad we should keep on moving

We are the government, we are our own saviour and no one else is coming.

The responsibility lies with us to make our way prosperous. So we need to keep developing, keep being better and keep making our world better..
