Entrepreneurship vs Paid Job

I was privileged to witness a discussion yesterday about merits and demerits of having a paid job versus being an entrepreneur, using Nigeria as a case study.

Almost everyone on the panel encouraged entrepreneurship, they said certificates are overrated. Everyone should acquire a skill and build on it.

Of course they said some truths but I disagree with some of the points raised. For instance, not everyone is built to be an entrepreneur no matter no skillset, they can only work under someone because they lack the motivation to push themselves without external force.

Also, some certain field of study requires that you work under someone, even if not forever, but for a while, to acquire practical knowledge even if you already have the funds to set up your own establishment.

More so, the issue of funding startups. Not everyone has access to capital or loans that they can build with.

The truth is, certificates aren't overrated, some certificates are. We need to move away from the generation of our parents where certain courses were celebrated and move into the digital age that's the trend in the world over. I told a friend, the problem isn't that we all want white collar jobs, the problem is, we educate ourselves to work in Nigeria. We do not think outside the box, daily I see people get employed through Twitter but we'd rather troll and follow threads than position ourselves for employment.

Entrepreneurship is great, but it's not as easy as they make it seem.

Meanwhile, who knows what I can do with my @esteem points?
