Stress Management

Stress is part of our life and it is a great motivator. Stress is important to all human beings and stress management is also very important too. Stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that his demands exceed the personal and social resources that he is able to mobilize. Excess stress may lead to physical, mental and emotional disturbances. At the same time, we need to have stress about our studies, work and other aspects of life.

A student should have stress to some extent about the forthcoming examinations. otherwise, he takes it easily. A teacher should have stress about the completion of syllabus. A manager should have some stress to manage his organizations successfully. A doctor should have stress about the operation he is going to conduct next hour. This stress will motivate the person to attend to his work more efficiently. This stress is essential but it should not cross the limit. Excess stress may cause problems.

Stress is like a Tiger

American psychologists compare stress with the tiger. As long as we tame it we can manage its behavior to be like that of a pet, the moment we do not handle it properly, it will jump and hurt us, why management consultants call this as stress management. Now here it is called as stress reduction or stress avoidance, It is only STRESS MANAGEMENT

Hans Selye the pioneer of stress research, said in 1956 that "stress is not necessarily something bad - it all depends on how to take it. The stress of exhilarating, creative successful work beneficial, while that of failure, humiliation or infection is detrimental." Selye believed that the biochemical effects of stress would be experienced, irrespective of whether the situation was positive or negative. Since then, ideas have moved on. In particular, the harmful biochemical and long-term effects of stress have rarely been observed in positive situations. The following are the effects of stress:

Physical Effects

Allergies, respiratory disorders, acidity, indigestion, skin disorders, rheumatism, back pains, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), insomnia, migraine headache, palpitations, dry mouth, nail biting, bed wetting, stammering, and stuttering.

Psychological Effects

Laziness, postponement, anxiety, tension, lack of concentration, lack of memory, mental fatigue, restlessness, low self-esteem, self-doubt, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), dissatisfaction with life and work, impotency, frigidity, hypochondriasis, infatuation, irrational fear, and phobias.

Behavioural Effects

Negative thinking, excessive smoking, alcoholism, drug abuse uncontrollable anger, suspicion, compulsive gambling, suicidal tendency' emotional black mailing, poor self-care, ideas of self-injuring, eating more or less and swings in moods.

Effects on the Family/Organization:

Ineffective role play, indifferent attitude, maladjustment with the classmates/colleagues, psychological withdrawal, poor job ance, absenteeism, daydreaming, carelessness, escapism, and buck-passing.

Don't escape from stress:

people who are afraid of stress try to avoid stressful situations and thus lose opportunities in life and remain in comfort zone. They depend upon faulty methods like smoking, drug dependency, drinking alcohol, overeating, sleeping too much, procrastination, withdrawing from friends, family, and routine activities, brooding, showing anger on others, watching television for hours together, avoiding communications. These activities make the person a coward and dependent. Such people have to seek professional help. otherwise, they will undergo heavy stress. These coping strategies may temporarily reduce stress, but they cause more damage in the long run.

• Keep the room clean and light incense sticks
• Avoid "type A' personality i.e., perfectionism, rigidity
• You are an important member of your family, play your role effectively
• Share your feelings with close family members and friends
• Develop a sense of humor, read jokes and cartoons
• Don't set two goals at one time which create conflict.

• Change your thinking, change your behavior, change your lifestyle

We must understand that every one of us needs a different level of stress in order to live a healthy, happy and successful life. Let us stop fearing stress, which is also called as "The space age sickness Instead of fearing and avoiding stress, let us convert stress into strengths and achieve success.
