The Ring Sling

in #motherhood7 years ago

A Ring Sling is a one-shoulder carrier that is usually made of linen or cotton. There are also Wrap Conversion Ring Slings (WCRS) that are made out of a woven wrap which is supportive and soft and usually more expensive. Ring Slings are great for newborns and easy to nurse in but you do need to get used to handling them. It took me two kids to master them. They can be used from the newborn stage on. They are a great option to give baby visibility to the world because they can be a great support when carrying the baby on the hip, as they get stronger, so they can hold their upper body, and more curious and eager to meet the world around them.

One of my favorites. A beautiful white linen sling with black mate rings. I sold it for charity.

The Ring Sling is made of a long piece of fabric with two rings sewn at one. There are a few general types of shoulders: gathered, pleated or padded. Some brands even offer their own type of shoulder. I personally owned only the pleated versions.

The top and bottom longer ends are hemmed and are called rails. The fabric is threaded through the rings creating a pouch to carry the baby and leaving a tail hanging at the front. The size of the ring sling only determines the length of the fabric and the length of the tail you end up with. It does not affect the fit for you and your baby. The size you choose depends on how tall you are. I have a ring sling that leaves a very long tail when you wrap the kid and it was ok for my sister, who originally bought it, that was taller than me but my friend that was shorter than me trampled over it.

A loverly orange one I got from a friend who bought it 2nd heand. It turned out another friend of mine actualy hand made it like 10 years ago.

Ring Slings can be used to carry baby on your front or on your hip. I saw some suggestions for a front carry position called ''The Buddha'' and a cradle like carry, as well as back carry that I unsuccessfully tried once, but I really don't fancy those and think they are not particularly safe for folks with the average knowledge and practice in carriers.

My man @alktoni babywearing like a man. A silky blue sling a friend borrowed to me. We forgot it on our car roof top. It fell on the main road and got demolished by cars.

When you are starting out it helps to practice in front of a mirror you can see how the fabric moves as you are adjusting.
Babies are not always very patient when you are learning a new carry. Try practicing with a doll first until you a little more comfortable adjusting your sling or make sure the baby is fed, clean, well rested and generally in a good mood when trying it out.

A sling from the same series as the silky blue one but a greenish color. This one I bought because the cars ran over the borroved one. Shit happen.

Sort:

I wonder how it would work for apple or tomato picking...

Worth a try! :)

It's great for olive or grape picking :) that I tried.

Great and good are seldom the same man.
