Brealfie: a picture of oneself while breastfeeding a baby.

When you are a new mom, especially one that struggled to achieve her breastfeeding goals you might want to celebrate it or share it with your friends. Among my villagers breastfeeding is just like any other part of parenting. Normal.
But there is another dimension to brelfies. In the last few decaids the breastfeeding rates declined dramatically. There are a few reasons for it but most important ones are the rise of individualism, families reduced from few generations living together to just the nuclear familiy, often apart from the grandparents or other relatives and the aggressive, malicios and unethical way formula was marketed to new parents. I have often heard from women that they had virtually no one in their close family who breastfed and that they have never seen a single women breastfeed in personal. The problem with it is that bottle feeding (which, to repeat, is not itself a bad thing) became the norm. The hypersexualization of womens bodies (breasts included) did not help. So brelfie became kind of a revolutionary act. A protest of some sort.
The benefits of brealfies, of women (and men) seeing others breastfeed, has been recognized even by the UN: "It's absolutely to be encouraged," World Health Organization spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a regular U.N. briefing in Geneva when asked about the brelfie fad.
