How Monsoon Works

1. Summer Monsoon:

   • Heating of the Land: During the summer, the land heats up faster than the ocean. This causes the air over the land to rise, creating a low-pressure area.
   • Moist Air from the Ocean: Cooler, moist air from the ocean is drawn towards the low-pressure area over the land.
   • Heavy Rainfall: As the moist air rises, it cools and condenses, leading to heavy rainfall.

2. Winter Monsoon:

   • Cooling of the Land: In winter, the land cools down faster than the ocean, creating a high-pressure area over the land.
   • Dry Air from the Land: Dry, cold air moves from the high-pressure area over the land to the lower pressure over the ocean.
   • Dry Conditions: This results in dry conditions over the land and often brings dry, cooler weather.

Benefits of Monsoon

• Agriculture: Monsoon rains are crucial for farming, providing the necessary water for crops like rice, wheat, and pulses.
• Water Supply: They replenish water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, ensuring a stable supply of water for drinking and irrigation.

Drawbacks of Monsoon

• Flooding: Excessive rainfall can lead to flooding, causing damage to homes, infrastructure, and crops.
• Diseases: Stagnant water from heavy rains can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of diseases like malaria and dengue.
• Displacement: Severe floods can displace communities, leading to temporary or permanent loss of homes and livelihoods.
