US Jury Found Glyphosate Major Cause of Cancer

We reported last week about Hardeman, a 70-year-old farmer from California, who was currently in a lawsuit with Bayer over claims that their Glyphosate-based Roundup ready weedkiller had caused his Cancer.

Well the verdict is in and what the jury ruled unanimously is that Glyphosate was a ‘substantial factor’ in contributing towards Hardemans Cancer.

This will be the second time a jury has concluded that Roundup weedkiller has caused Caner following the case of another Californian, Dewayne Johnson, a former school groundskeeper who was last year awarded $289 Million in damages. The Jury stated that Monsanto had failed to warn Johnson of the health hazards and that they “acted with malice or oppression”.

In the next phase of the trial, the jury will determine the liability and damages, while Hardemans lawyers will present arguments about Monsanto’s influence on government regulators and cancer research.

This landmark case will inevitably open the flood gates for an estimated further 9000 similar lawsuits across the US.

Let’s not forget that the World Health Organisation(WHO) in 2015 announced that Glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans”.

This statement from the WHO received a lot of backlash from the industry as the new classification is backed by a very limited amount of evidence supported by human trials. However, despite this the classification remains at “probably carcinogenic”
