San Sebastián es un santo venerado por la Iglesia católica y la Iglesia ortodoxa. Nacido en Narbona, actualmente territorio francés, sería soldado del ejército romano a las órdenes del emperador Diocleciano, quien desconociendo que era cristiano, llegaría a nombrarlo jefe de la primera cohorte de la guardia pretoriana imperial. Finalmente, sería descubierto y denunciado al emperador Maximiano, quien en conjunto con Diocleciano, ejercían como co-gobernantes del imperio, quien lo obligaría a escoger entre su condición militar y su fe religiosa.

Al negarse a abandonar sus creencias, San Sebastián es condenado a morir atravesado con las fechas de los arqueros, siendo entonces trasladado al estadio, donde lo despojan de sus ropas y es atado a un árbol, para luego lanzar sobre él una lluvia de flechas. Dándolo por muerto, los soldados lo abandonan, sin embargo sobreviviría, siendo rescatado por sus amigos, quienes lo llevan a casa de una noble cristiana romana, que lo mantuvo escondido y le curaría las heridas.

Una vez restablecido, se presentaría nuevamente ante el emperador, donde le reprocha enérgicamente su conducta por perseguir a los cristianos. Maximiano ordenaría que lo azotaran hasta morir, misión que los soldados cumplirían esta vez sin errores, tirando luego su cuerpo en un lodazal, donde los cristianos lo recogerían, siendo enterrado en la Vía Apia, en la célebre catacumba que lleva el nombre de San Sebastián.

A San Sebastián se le invoca contra las plagas, enfermedades y enemigos de la religión; se le considera el santo patrono de arqueros, soldados y atletas., siendo además un santo venerado en América Latina y España, donde es patrón de multitud de municipios por todo el país, incluyendo Palma de Mallorca en las Islas Baleares, entre otros.

El 20 de enero de 1591, sería designado patrono de Maracaibo, cuando la ciudad era apenas un pequeño poblado, invocando su protección contra los ataques de los indígenas. En el Monumento Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá, conocido popularmente como Paseo de La Chinita, existe un plaza con su imagen, donde se le representaría semi-desnudo, atado a un árbol y su cuerpo atravesado por las flechas.

Esta fotografía que forma parte de mi archivo personal, la tomé cinco años atrás, cuando por razones laborales, tuve que residenciarme temporalmente en la llamada "Tierra del Sol Amada", en alusión al poema del escritor y poeta marabino Rafael María Baralt. Posteriormente modificaría la imagen haciendo uso de las herramientas de edición que proporciona el PicsArt, para lo cual empleé una superposición de filtros.
