Monochrome Monday - Ellicott’s Mills
Since the 1700s, there have been mills in Ellicott City, Maryland sitting along the Patapsco River. While most of them have long been closed, one remains today and has been operating at the foot of Old Ellicott City since the 1960s. If you’ve ever used Washington Corn Bread or Corn Muffin mix, it probably came from the mill featured below for #monochromemonday.
You may remember Ellicott City from your American history class as the destination for the first 13 miles of track laid by the B&O railroad line in the US, coming from downtown Baltimore to this little mill town.
It’s a wonder the mill remains in operation since the river rises out of its banks regularly. In July of 2016, it rose 16 feet in an hour and a half, killing two people and washing over a hundred cars off of Main Street into the river.
In this recent photo, you can see the river is full of ice and the rapids are raging.
That’s a little #hometownhistory for #monochromemonday.
so it has been included in
the latest issue of 'Notes'.
Pop over and see what the fam is up to!
That was a nice history lesson and even though I am not from the United States, I think I have learnt something new. Thanks for sharing @dabeckster. Lets link up @osmansnr.
You’re welcome.
Nice bit of history but that river doesn't look to healthy :)
Thanks. It’s normally not muddy, but it was after a few days of heavy rain.
That mill is stunning in Monochrome, an impressive structure and quite foreboding with the tree branches in the foreground.
