Could Ethereum take over the role of Ripple?

Hi guys, i sort of know a little about ripple and a bit about ethereum. I was just wondering, from what i hear about Ethereum having smart contracts/being sort of programmable money.

Is there the possibility of Ethereum being able to technically perform the role of Ripple?
