I'd think the best coin to save would be 1982 and older pennies for the copper content. One day soon I bet the Fed makes the "money saving" decision to no longer have it minted thus making melting the older pennies legal. The base copper metal will no doubt be worth more than a penny.
My theory isn't about the value of the copper in pennies, just like it's not the current value of the Paper that give the paper it's buying power... I do understand your point of view however...
