The value of space is often underestimated. That's part of the feeling of lightness and spaciousness you talked about. @sift666 and I are always looking for things that we can pass on. If we think it will get $20 or more, it's listed on Trade Me (the NZ version of eBay). Otherwise, it goes into a giveaway box in our porch. We have a lot of people who come to our door, and anything they can use, they are welcome to take. Having been in this house for 30 years, it takes vigilance to keep the clutter from taking over!
