Save Money On Vacations

in #money8 years ago

Vacations are so much fun, But they also can be extremely expensive.

Saving money on vacations will allow you to go on more vacations throughout the year!

  • Stay in a hostel instead of a hotel. Hostels are not as nice as hotels. But they are worth it. They can cost as low as 30.00 per night!
  • Compare hotel prices or even consider renting a home or a room with random people. This could easily save you hundreds of dollars. Plus you can have more leverage with where you want to stay exactly. Try priceline.com
  • Consider a hotel room with a mini kitchen, take a quick trip to a local grocery store and cook your meals! This could save hundreds by avoiding fast food. Some hostels have kitchens available for your use.

  • Purchase plane tickets in advance as this can cut the costs significantly.
45 days in advance for summer
30 days in advance for other times in the year.

  • Avoid packing too much stuff; it can add extra hassle to your vacation. Plus you will be paying extra for the extra baggage. Try to stick with a carry-on and nothing more! There are so many tips on how to "roll your clothes" for travel.
I found these helpful videos on Youtube, They aren't mine.
  • Round trip tickets are usually cheaper! Check into those too.

  • Eat more at lunchtime and less at dinner; lunch is usually cheaper at most places.

  • Don't eat fast food the whole trip, Go to a nearby grocery store and buy ramen noodles and other ingredients. If you have a microwave in your hotel room, you can cook meals.
I recently bought these popup bowls from amazon I and my boyfriend can eat cereal, ramen noodles, and other things right from the bowl! They are even microwaveable and easily compact and will fit in my carry on with less trouble!
I also bought us some steel chopsticks because they are nice and compact to travel with!

  • Pay for your rental car with a credit card. Many credit cards have insurance that will automatically cover you. Plus you'll get cashback.

  • Get the smallest car you possibly can. It will be cheaper and easier to drive.
  • Fill the car up before bringing it back. Do not let them charge you for that extra tank of gas. It is much cheaper to do it yourself.
  • Sometimes reservations can be canceled for a full refund, so keep your eyes open for more deals.
  • Enjoy hikes, Swimming in the Ocean, Walk through the park. These activities are fun and free!
  • Take any membership cards you have like AAA or student cards. Many places give discounts for being a part of these things.
  • Go to free events that the area has to offer; different areas have different events. You would be surprised how much fun you can have by doing things for cheap.
  • If you bring too much stuff, consider shipping it back instead of bringing it back to the airport. You can use USPS flat rate shipping or get a large box shipped through UPS.

Use AirBnB to find a place to stay, it's usually nicer and cheaper than a hotel! (Although more expensive than a hostel.)

Disclaimer: I'm an AirBnb host.

Have used both..i choose depending on the location.Booking.com is also good and not too expensive so long as it's booked early.

good ones 4 sure

Thank you :)

My Kentucky born grandfather had six children and a simple saying about vacation: "we can always go first class, we just can't stay as long".

So true! I'd rather stay a little longer, And focus on saving money.

Good posts as always. Keep posting and keep spreading happiness @kaylinart

Thank you very much!

Very good tips
The tips on packing are excellent

Thank you !

If you wanted to spend a luxurious travel at very low cost expense, try philippines :)

Yes please do.Palawan is quieter than boracay, less commercialised as well.

good advices. thanks a lot.

No problem :)

Good pointers. Here in Switzerland there are so many places to hike and explore and all of that is free. If you hold a bank card from Raiffeisen most museums are free! Another little known fact here in Switzerland is that although public transportation is VERY expensive you can get a day pass through the township that lets you use the train, boats, buses etc... for about $40 for 24 hours!
Too bad it took me about 15 years to discover all of that!
