RE: Payment for College Athletes: The Debate Continues

in #money7 years ago

This is a great in depth analysis youve done Ethan. Firstly, as a huge sports fan, I love that football season is back, who you got heading to the National championship this year?

But when it comes to paying players/students there is no easy solution. These students are making hundreds of millions for their schools and not receiving any financial compensation. They are rewarded with stardom and the pro contracts that follow usually justify the wait. But there are many people who reach their pinnacle in university and never progress to the next level, they completely miss out on the big pay day.

What I think might work is that if students received an equal amount of profit sharing from revenues they create, even if it was just a small amount, this would be great. There could be stipulations put in place, like needing to maintain a certain GPA etc, but giving the athletes back some of the revenues will not do harm. Great post.

As I delved into this subject while researching for this post, I just kept discovering issue after issue. I didn't realize it was so complex.

Bringing the grades side of things into the argument is interesting since they are indeed supposed to be students. Often times the university will lower academic standards for scholarship athletes, which may put them at even more of a disadvantage if they don't make it professionally.

I'm a big sports fan too! Since the universities I've attended don't have championship caliber teams (who knows, maybe they'll surprise me this year), I usually just get behind teams in the ACC since I grew up in NC. I'd like to see someone else besides Alabama make it to the championship, so it was nice to see Clemson win last year.

Thanks for your comment and the tip. I enjoy writing these posts. It combines a sort of scientific writing that I'm used to in graduate school with issues that interest me outside of my scientific field. I hope to have more topics like this to discuss in the future.

We've got similar interests. I have a science related degree and am a huge sports nut, so I feel like we will be having many discussions about this in the future

What kind of science background do you have?

And yes, yesterday was a good day. Both of my college teams won their games.
