'Sometimes i just want to be a filthy capitalist' My brief thoughts on why some see eschewing money as a virtue

in #money6 years ago (edited)

A Facebook friend of mine posted on his wall:

'Why are we raised with such shame about saying loud and proud: ‘I Love Money!’'

The following were my brief thoughts:

'I've been thinking about this a lot myself.
We all need stuff from the world and it seems less than enlightened to me to shun the medium of exchange required to get our needs met, yet this shunning is often framed as the more enlightened approach.

To answer your question, i think it could be to do with how our caregivers treated the expression of our needs as dependent children going back generations.

Many of us were treated as bad people for having needs, so rather than criticize and confront the caregivers who denied our needs; maybe framing the eschewal of money as an enlightened way to be is the only other option, thus re-framing it as a virtue as a defence mechanism against confronting the parents responsible.

I'm proud to say that sometimes i just want to be a filthy capitalist ;-)'

Capitalism truly is the best -ism. Dunno about you all, but I like consensual exchange and private ownership. Not only is it moral, its effective at building long-term wealth across the greatest number of people.

Yes, i agree, it took me many years to understand the genius and ethical nature of capitalism, now that i do i don't think that any other method of human interaction could do a better job of meeting everyone's needs,

Because money is the unifying means of exchange, it's the point at which conflicts between different values become apparent. No one actually loves money for its own sake; they love it for the flexibility it gives them to obtain other things. Since people want to obtain different things and all think their own preferences are superior to everyone else's, they tend to see pursuit of money by others as an insult to whatever they consider most valuable. Of course people are much more understanding of their own pursuit of money in order to provide for their families or achieve whatever other goals they may have.
