There is nothing like that new Insert product smell as the saying goes, there is an absolute satisfaction that comes with purchasing something new that tickles our brain in a way we can't describe. There was a time when consumers would stop, look, listen and think before deciding if they should part with their labour+time in the form of money in exchange for some shiny new trinket.

As companies got smarter and people got dumber, a magpie effect ensured, and the product doesn't matter as much as the feeling it brings you. Instead of purchasing something for the sake of its utility we now buy things for the way they look, the way they make us feel, the fact that its new, the brand name, the social status and the ability to flex your resources to those around you.

A society of spenders

IF that wasn't enough to cause a cycle of consumerism, we now have generations of consumers who advocate consuming as if they were a religion. Have you heard of iPhone our Lord and Saviour? Do you have time to listen to the right word that is Samsung? Consumers have become brand evangelists, and so many people don't even realise they are walking adverts.

Have you ever met someone who bought a new phone or car, it's all they can talk about, they need to sell you the idea of their purchase to validate why they purchased it, they can't only be happy with the purchase. However, they don't want you to make the same purchase but also feel pressured to make a similar purchase in a lower or same bracket from another brand. Because even though I love this product, I don't want you to use it because it speaks to my ability o spend and individuality.

These are probably some of the weirdest most nonsensical conversions you will ever have should you take the time to listen to the various contradictory statements from someone who paid for a product and then to be their unofficial spokesperson.

Pressure purchases

Now the average person who isn't clued up feels pressure to purchase because his car or phone is a few years old or models behind. Regardless of the fact that said purchase provides you with the utility you need at a diminishing cost to you as you extend the use of it you now feel irrationally competed to purchase something new that provides the same service but at a higher cost.

A consumer is a one-trick pony it only knows how to consume and if you take your advice from the average consumer what are they going to tell you? To consume!

Well, you sold that idea to me 😉

Now I'll spend my money on steem instead! Pay day Friday 😁

In fact, I am getting a new car next month but a cheaper model so I am spending less each month (I'm on a lease contract so I'm basically renting a new car every 2 years without owning it). This should free up spare cash for other things...

I’m going to be honest I’m going HAM on BTC I think it’s the one that will be the least obliterated by any downturn and with the halving I want to get as much as I can for cheaper! STEEMs inflation still gives me time to add more

I’m happy with the 1.89%% I get on holding SP and the 12% APR from leasing and then still ontop Of that posting and curating!

Sure I’d like some more steem but I think alts are going to be rekt some more this year.

I have been so cheap lately it’s not even funny I have a new calculation I see how low I can keep my expenses and then work out how long I can live on what I have without working! I’m now up to 5 years and 5 months lol still a long way to set for a full retirement but I’ll get there it’s all starting to compound nicely

Take into account surprise medical bills, accidents and other unexpected expenses.

Oh 100% thats naturally without it but the fact that I have these funds means in case there are such situations I can cover it and we’ll just reduce the years I’ll be able to be income Independant

I said it because I know people who got their savings and ran away into retirement. Then when the crisis struck, they spent their savings, but they could not earn it back because crises can cripple you, and forced retirement also pulls you away from earning opportunities. Starting over isn't always an option after you retire.

So, as you can see, my warning is mostly about retiring, don't count on re-entering the financial world once you leave it, make enough to leave and not have to come back even when you get hit hard.

Oh I fully agree with you I would never advocate living by eating into your principle you should be using your capital to generate returns that you can live off that way you continue to build your base and create new buffers for emergency

I feel the same way and I don’t plan on having to go back once I’ve made my cut

Nooo, I wrote a super long comment and then left the page and it didn't get saved.

I was saying.

You remind me of my "old" ways, 1.5 year ago when Steem was more profitable. It's not so high anymore, and I took it as a signal to stop putting so much effort, but now I'm regretting it, obviously, because it was a decision made with impulsivity and not with much thought into it. I guess a little inspiration from you is not bad.

Your post structure is the best, I think. I had also arrived at the same format. Intro text, image, subsections. I used H3 (###) for my intro text, though, but it's all the same anyway if the hook hooks.

I need to start again. Thankfully I still have my dear followers like you do. Similar amount, and you have about the same followers too, the same people vote on you as on me. In terms of money, you're much better off right now. I've got the equivalent of around 8000 STEEM in my savings, including everything in my wallet, and you've got more invested elsewhere.

So, interesting to find someone somewhat similar to me. I tried Actifit but I never leave my home with my phone due to theft risks (so much crime in Venezuela, similar to South Africa where you're from).

I'm ashamed of the current state of my personal feed. Yours looks much better. Better blog topics. Mine are all small, infrequent and either too personal or too shitposty. I lost myself in depression when my Steem value went down from $3000 to $750, lol. I'm thankfully recovered (emotionally).

I was also thinking of adding a bit of an affiliate footer to my posts. But I've already compromised most of my time for this year. I'm not sure I will be making effortful blog posts like yours. We'll see. I sure hope I'll be making more satisfactory content. Thanks again for the inspiration.

edit: And you also very eloquently reply to all comments you get. Ah, I did the same thing. Are you me in disguise? (I used to even reply to the bots haha, sometimes they replied, bots have owners!)

And as a reply to your post itself, I find it quite funny and ironic that in your post criticising consumerism, you satirically use the image used by a serious journal promoting the same consumerism.

Personally, I also think that the problem of inequality is perpetuated by people's mentality of throwing money at everything they like without thinking about the consequences. If people truly want equality, they should buy from independent producers and not from centralised multinationals. Decentralised spending would ensure a flatter distribution.

In terms of being bought by marketing, I think it's true, people are buying too much stuff they don't need. They mis-distribute their earnings and then complain about not having enough for essential things. This would be solved with better financial education, I guess. But the ones who provide the content are the same ones that want consumerism. If I sell a product, I sure as hell don't want my clients to be researching whether they are truly philosophically justified in purchasing it.

Well I’m glad you took the time to rewrite this awesome comment! I don’t really use other social media apart from LinkedIn and it’s become such a habit to share my thoughts here especially because they wouldn’t resonate with other social media platforms!

It’s all vanity platforms and very little thinking and constructive banter! Here I can let loose things that have been confined to WhatsApp conversations in the past but now it’s out I. The open and sometimes it resonates With people like yourself which is cool and let’s me know I’m not crazy.

I understand how the price decline can kill motivations and push people away but when I got in steem was around 3 dollars coming down from 8 and I thought I’d never have a lot of SP but I kept at it and kept buying as the prices kept falling and now it allows me to get involved in several projects! It’s really become more of a hobby for me and I learn so much so I don’t mind giving the time to it

I’m glad you’re back you sound like you’re filled with insights and I’m always keen to learn about other counties and cultures which I’m sure I will from you

We can only change it by changing one person at a time and starting with yourself! While you may seem weird now in a few years people will follow when they see method to your madness and let self interest do the rest

I like to think I am not some halfwit fanboy consumer. In phones I have two criteria, not an iphone and must be android. The model and make makes no difference, since I use to own a cheaper android with more ram and cpu than some shitsung. I now have a shitsung but got it for free. I don't mind waiting to get something I want, like with when I buy a new pc. I have had my current shitty i7 for almost 5 years now. Lol I think the biggest consumerism is in the everyday trash people buy, from they only drink coca-cola to they only eat a specific brand of chips. Not to mention clothes... and yet the same people will sneak into the china shop buying shirts to match with their name-brand jeans. Every twat has some account woolworths food and identity clothing right down to clicks points. Maybe at my own detriment but I have none, I don't even have spar rewards and I only shop there cause they across the road. Stick it to the man. !tip 1

Lol all my shit is no name and if it does have a name it’s probably fake! Only thing I spend on is soccer boots since if I go cheap they break quicker and I end up spending more!

I don’t have any of the shop cards but I do have a Ucount card because I’m with standard shit and well petrol and groceries add up and I get a small something back! I think it’s still a bunch of kak though but lol allow me this one vice

Oh and don’t get me started on people who must go to certain places to eat or don’t like certain brands because they don’t know they all made by the same fucking companies lol
